Rumours circulate online about the future of Sonisphere 2012, with an official statement expected tomorrow.

A statement is expected tomorrow about the fate of this year’s festival, which is due to take place at Knebworth House in Hertfordshire from 6-8 July.

Kiss, Queen with Adam Lambert and Faith No More were announced as this year’s headliners last month, but rumours began spreading this morning that the festival would now be cancelled, allegedly because of poor ticket sales.

The rumour began to gain credence on Twitter and Facebook, and the administrator of Queen’s official forum promised an “update on the Sonisphere show coming in the next day or so.”
This afternoon, all mention of the Knebworth show has disappeared from Queen’s website.

A statement on Sonisphere by the group also appeared on the site, before being hastily deleted. It began: "It is with heavy hearts and much regret that we announce the cancellation of Sonisphere Knebworth 2012."


Metal website Thrash Hits ran a story saying that they’d “had a few confirmations from people linked to the festival but no official word from the festival promoters” regarding the possible cancellation.

Manchester rock venue Satan's Hollow, due to host promo nights and ticket giveaways for the event, also alleged on their Facebook page that they had spoken to people involved with the festival who had told them it had been cancelled.

Tickets appear to have been taken off sale, and it is now no longer possible to buy tickets for the festival from the Sonisphere website.

When asked about the rumours, a spokesman for Sonisphere’s PR, Full Fat, said "I can't confirm or deny anything at the moment but there will be an announcement on the Sonisphere website tomorrow."

They gave no clue to the nature of the announcement, or the time of the announcement.

The Bulgarian leg of Sonisphere was cancelled last year due to logistical problems.

Sonisphere is running five other European events, with Metallica due to headline in Poland, Spain, Switzerland and Finland, and Faith No More and Evanescence topping the bill in France. It’s not known if they will be affected should the UK cancellation rumours turn out to be true.

Putting the festival together in what is proving to be a very challenging year was more difficult than we anticipated and we have spent the last few months fighting hard to keep Sonisphere in the calendar. Unfortunately circumstances have dictated that we would be unable to run the festival to a standard that both the artists and that Sonisphere’s audience would rightly expect.

We want to express our deepest regrets to the artists and to thank all the staff, suppliers and contractors who worked so hard with us to try and pull off what has proven to be an impossible task and we know how much they share in our disappointment. We also want to send a huge thanks to the Sonisphere fans who stuck by us and we are so sorry that we can’t fulfil what we set out to do.
