"Aprovechando la salida del sorprendente debút del proyecto melódico del compositor italiano Stefano Lionetti, Alexander Carbonero (Jarryguo) de #HardRock_&_AOR estuvo charlando con el artista italiano sobre el que será a buen seguro uno de los discos revelación de este 2011."





Alexander: Lo primero de todo, darte la enhorabuena por tu gran debut.

Stefano Lionetti: Muchas gracias, agradecemos mucho vuestro apoyo!

Alexander: ¿Podrías ofrecernos una breve resumen de tu carrera musical hasta la salida del albúm?

Stefano Lionetti: Mi acercamiento a la música sucedió a los 11 años. Tocaba la guitarra y escuchaba discos de Toto, Richard Marx, Chicago, Bad English, Giant, Jay Graydon, Journey, Def Leppard, Boulevard Bon Jovi, pero también música pop como Phil Collins, Spandau Ballet y Police. A los 12 años ya grababa algunas canciones propias. Entre los años 1997 y 2011 trabajé como cantante y guitarrista en la mayoría de los clubs de Liguria, Italia. Durante tres años intenté entrar como compositor y cantante en el festival de Sanremo (el festival pop más famoso de Italia). Entre los años 2005 y 2006 toqué en Italia y en Santo Domingo como frontman de “Smaila's Band” y “Star's band”, donde colaboraban algunos artistas de la música y del show-business italiano.
Mi pasión por el rock melódico me hace tomar la decisión de componer y arreglar algunos temas AOR del tipo de Toto, Richard Marx y Bad English, y hacer realidad este álbum debut en este género.

Alexander: ¿Como fué el proceso creativo desde el concepto inicial hasta su salida al mercado?

Stefano Lionetti: Las ideas me vinieron en distintos momentos. La inspiración llega según la condición emocional. Normalmente cojo la guitarra pero a veces me siento al piano (también soy un teclista algo torpe ;-) ) y la idea fluye... Entonces, envío la demo con letras de base a Pierpaolo Monti, quien como siempre, es muy capaz de desarrollar mis pequeñas guías y crear grandes letras! Además debería mencionar la valiosa aportación de Lars Safsund, Robert Sall y Alessandro Del Vecchio a la composición de las letras.
En este álbum he metido una especie de “grandes éxitos” de mis composiciones llevando a la luz algunas ideas de hace tiempo. Por ejemplo, “Centre of my universe” es de 2008, “With you” es un remake de un tema (originalmente con letra en italiano) que escribí en 2005 y “Say goodbye” pertenece al año 2009... Los demás temas son más recientes.

Alexander: ¿Como fué trabajar con leyendas como Bruce Gaitsch, Tommy Denander o nuevas promesas de la escena AOR como Erik Martensson o Lars Säfsund? ¿Por qué no decidistes cantar tus propias canciones?

Stefano Lionetti: Bueno, como escribí en los créditos del cd, es un honor tener a cada uno de ellos en este primer disco. Antes sólo les escuchaba, ahora son parte de mi proyecto... ¡wow!
Tener a Bruce Gaitsch como invitado en mi disco es un sueño hecho realidad. Hizo una gran contribución en el disco en aspectos como el sonido y la clase.
¿Y qué puedo decir de Lars? ... en estos momentos él es uno de mis cantantes favoritos y representa un valor añadido al disco. Tommy Denander y Sven Larsson dieron un toque inconfundible a las canciones que tocaron y los coros de Eric Martensson en “Thunder in your heart” son simplemente increíbles. Trabajar con semejantes músicos ha sido genial para mí. Finalmente, quiero recordar el trabajo hecho por músicos italianos que son grandes profesionales y muy buenas personas.
En cuanto a mí como cantante, me encanta cantar mis propias canciones, y fue un gran reto tener la posibilidad de publicar este disco y cantar en él. Sin embargo, no puedo compararme con Lars... tan... como se dice en latín: “ubi maior minor cessat”.


Alexander: La canción "The World Without Your Love" es exclusiva para el albúm?

Stefano Lionetti: Sí, la canción fue escrita exclusivamente para Lionville ¡y fue un honor tener esta obra maestra en mi disco debut! ¡Y más siendo Richard Marx uno de mis ídolos de siempre!



Alexander: ¿Como surgió la idea de regrabar una nueva versión del clásico de John Farham "Thunder in Your Heart?

Stefano Lionetti: "Thunder In Your Heart” fue una sugerencia de mi hermano Alessandro (el productor ejecutivo del disco junto a Gregor Klee) e inmediatamente estuve de acuerdo con él. El tema es increíble y nunca ha aparecido en ningún disco oficial. Creímos que merecía mayor atención. Y también tiene letras ganadoras, que tratan sobre la determinación y la fuerza, incluyendo una línea que dice “the heart of a lion”...
Alessandro Del Vecchio y yo decidimos hacer una versión diferente a la original de John Farnham, más hardrockera.


Alexander: ¿Cuales son tus tres canciones favoritas del cd?

Stefano Lionetti: Oh, ¡eso es difícil! … es muy difícil porque sería como preguntar a un padre cual es su hijo favorito. En cualquier caso, para hacer las cosas fáciles hablaré sólo de los temas escritos por mí ;-) “With you”, “Over and over again”, “No end in sight”. Pero dejadme mencionar también “Say goodbye”, quizá menos AOR pero, en mi opinión, una gran canción.


Alexander: ¿Esperabas tan buenas reacciones y criticas hacía el album?

Stefano Lionetti: He visto muchas críticas maravillosas de todo el mundo, ¡es increíble! Lo más bonito es que cada crítico tiene su tema favorito diferente. No esperaba semejante reacción y obviamente, ¡estoy muy feliz!


Alexander: ¿Cambiarías muchas cosas del resultado final?

Stefano Lionetti: Quizás me gustaría haber tenido más cuidado con los arreglos y algunos sonidos, pero en general me gusta como está.


Alexander: ¿Conoces muchas bandas de AOR españolas?

Stefano Lionetti: Hace muchos años mi hermano y yo escuchábamos a “Heroes del silencio” y a “91 Suite”. Sobre el resto de las bandas, acepto tus sugerencias.


Jarryguo: ¿Estás al tanto de la nueva escena melódica? ¿Con que nuevas formaciones te quedarías?

Stefano Lionetti: Si te refieres a grupos de AOR y rock melódico... en estos momentos entre las nuevas bandas me gustan mucho WET, WOA y Marcello-Vestry. También creo que es muy interesante el disco debut de Soul Seller.


Alexander: Lionville es solo un proyecto en estudio o hay planes de convertirse en una banda "real"?

Stefano Lionetti: Lionville no es sólo un proyecto. Es una banda real y tenemos planes de futuro muy interesantes, empezando por la esperanza de tocar en directo.


Alexander: ¿Escribes para otros artistas? Alguna exclusiva para Hard rock_ & _AOR? haha!

Stefano Lionetti: En estos momentos escribo sólo para mí exceptuando algunos temas pop que he escrito para artistas italianos. Pero por supuesto espero escribir en el futuro algo para otras bandas o artistas AOR y de rock melódico.


Alexander: Además de tu pasión por la música, ¿Que otros hobbies tiene Steffano Lionetti en su tiempo libre?

Stefano Lionetti: Me gusta jugar y ver fútbol. En particular soy seguidor del equipo italiano Sampdoria. Además, me encanta leer libros y comer buena comida.


Alexander: "No End in Sight" es uno de los mejores temas AOR del año. En # Hardrock_ & AOR es un fenómeno. ¿Por qué grabastes una versión sin el excelente sección de coros final?

Stefano Lionetti: !Muchas gracias! Este tema es muy cercano a mi corazón. Bueno... ¡no sé! Queríamos crear una versión alternativa más orientada a una banda de rock acústica y así la idea de Bruno Kraler fue la de eliminar algunos estribillos de la canción (él mezcló los tres temas extra).

Alexander: ¿Que te ha parecido el nuevo disco de WOA?

Stefano Lionetti: ¡Claro! “In progress” es definitivamente uno de mis discos favoritos de los últimos diez años. Creo que Robert y compañía hicieron un excelente trabajo, quizás superando su primer disco.


Alexander: Me encanta la banda italiana Fab Box.¿Que te parecen? ¿Que tal una colaboración con el gran Michele Luppi?

Stefano Leonetti: Sí, estoy muy agradecido por la colaboración de Gregor Klee y creo que gran parte del éxito del primer disco se debe a él. Además es muy buena persona.
En cuanto a Michelle Luppi…¡Por supuesto! Es un gran cantante y no quiero excluir nada en el futuro. Sin embargo, en mi opinión, ¡Lars es el mejor!

1. First of all congratulations for your excellent debut.

Thank you very much, your support is much appreciated!


2. Could you give us a short bio of your musical career until the album's release?

I approached the music at the age of 11. I played guitar and listened to the records of Toto, Richard Marx, Chicago, Bad English, Giant, Jay Graydon, Journey, Def Leppard, Boulevard, Bon Jovi, but also pop music like Phil Collins, Spandau Ballet & Police. At the age of 12 I was already recording some songs of my own. Between '97 and 2011 I worked as a singer and guitar player in the most known clubs and piano-bar in Liguria, Italy. For three years i tried to get as a songwriter and singer at the Sanremo Festival, (the most famous pop festival in Italy). Between 2005 and 2006 i played in Italy and Santo Domingo as the frontman of “Smaila's Band” and “Star’s band” featuring some artists of italian music and show-business.
My passion for melodic rock makes me take the decision to write and arrange some AOR songs in the vein of Toto, Richard Marx and Bad English and to realize a debut album in this genre.


3. How did it drive the creative process? Since the idea and concept to its release.

The ideas come to me at various times. I draw inspiration from my emotional condition. Usually I take the guitar in my hands but sometimes I sit at the piano (I’m also a rough keyboardplayer! ;-) ) and the idea goes on…Then, I send the demo with rough lyrics to Pierpaolo Monti who, as usual, is very able to develop my little directions and to create great lyrics! In addition I should say that it was very valuable the contribution of Lars Safsund, Robert Sall and Alessandro Del Vecchio to the lyrics compostion.
In this album I’ve get together a kind of “greatest hits” of my compositions bringing to light ideas of sometime ago. For example, Centre of my universe date back to 2008, With you is a remake of a song (originally with Italian lyrics) that i wrote in 2005 and Say goodbye belongs to year 2009…The other tracks are more recent.

4. How was working with legends like Bruce Gaitsch, Tommy Denander or nines or promises as Lars Erik Martensson Säfsund? Why not sing your own songs?

Well, as i wrote in the cd credits, I am honored to have each of them on my first album. Until recently I just listened to them, now they are part of my project…wow!
Having Bruce Gaitsch as a guest on my album is the realization of a dream. He brought ​​a great contribution to the record in terms of sound and class.
What can I say about Lars?...In this moment he’s one of my favourite singers and represents the true value added of the album. Tommy Denander and Sven Larsson gave their unmistakable touch in the songs they played and the Eric Martensson’s background vocals on Thunder in your heart are simply amazing! Working with such a musicians has been great for me. Finally, I want to remember the work done by Italian musicians who are all great professionals and very good people.
About me as a singer, I love so much to sing my own songs, and it was a great goal having the possibility of realize this album and sing on it. However, I can not compare myself to Lars…so… as it’s said in Latin: “ubi maior minor cessat”.

5. The song "The World Without Your Love" was exclusive to the album?

Yes, the song was written exclusively for Lionville and I’m so honoured to have this masterpiece on my debut album! Moreover Richard Marx is one of my idols of all time!

6. How did the idea of recording a version of the classic John Farham "Thunder in Your Heart?

“Thunder In Your Heart” was suggested by my brother Alessandro (the executive producer of the album with Gregor Klee) and I immediately agreed with him. The track is amazing and it has never appeared on any official compact disc. We thought it deserved more attention. It also has some winning lyrics dealing with determination and strength and there is a line saying: "The heart of a LION”…
Alessandro Del Vecchio and me, decided to do a different version compared to the John Farnham original, more hard rock.


7. What are your three favorite songs of the album?

Oh, this is hard! Well… It is very difficult for me because it would be like if you ask to a father: “what’s your favorite son?”… anyway: to make things easier I’ll just talk about the songs written by me ;-). With You – Over And Over Again – No end in sight. But let me mention also “Say Goodbye”: maybe less AOR but, in my opinion, a great Song.

8. Did you expect so much praise and good reviews? You feel overwhelmed with so much positive reaction to the album?

I’ve seen a lot of wonderful review all over the world, it’s incredible! The most beautiful thing is that each reviewer has his favorite song. I didn’t expected such a great reaction and, obviously, I’m very very happy!

9. If you could change anything on the album...?

Maybe I’d like to take more care of the arrangements and some sounds, but generally I love it in this way!

10. Spanish rock bands you know?

Many years ago me and my brother listened to “Heroes del silencio” and “91Suite”. For the other Spanish rock bands I accept suggestions from you!


11. You know the melodic scene today? What new groups do you prefer?

If you mean AOR and melodic rock groups…in this moment among the new bands, I like so much WET, WOA and Marcello-Vestry. I think it’s also interesting the Soul Seller’s debut album.

12.Lionville is just a project or band plans are "real"?

Lionville isn’t only a project, I’t’s a real band and we have very interesting plans for the future, first of all we hope to play live!


13.Do you write for other artists? An exclusive for hard rock_ & _AOR hard? haha!

At this moment I'm writing just for me except some pop songs that I wrote for Italian artists. But of course I hope in the future to write something for other AOR & melodic rock bands/artists.


14. Aside from your passion for music, what other hobbies you Stefano Lionetti in your spare time?

I like to play and watch football. In particular I follow the italian football team “Sampdoria”. Moreover, I love to read books and to eat good food!

15. "No End in Sight" is one of the AOR issues of the year at # Hardrock_ & AOR is a phenomenon. Why an alternative version without the excellent chorus line?

¡Thank you very much! This song is very close to my heart. Well…I don’t know! We wanted to create an alternative version more “acoustic-rock-band-oriented” and so the Bruno Kraler’s idea (he mixed the three bonus tracks) was to remove some chorus from the song.

16.Did you liked the new WOA album ?

Sure! In progress is definitely one of my favourite album of last ten years. I think Robert and co. did an excellent work, maybe they have surpassed the debut album.

17. I love Italians Fab Box. What do you think?
Would you like to collaborate with the great Michele Luppi?

Yes, I’m very pleased with the collaboration with Gregor Klee and I think a lot of credit for the success of the first album should go to him. In addition he is a very good person.
About Michel Luppi…of course! He is a great singer and I don’t want to rule out anything for the future, however, in my opinion, Lars is the best!
