Frodcatley:En los tres primeros álbumes trabajaste con Gary Hughes. En los tres últimos con diferentes personas, ¿Por alguna razón en especial?


Bob Catley: Mis tres primeros discos en solitario fueron lo suficientemente exitosos como para pensar en trabajar con otros compositores en mis siguientes discos. Todos los discos triunfan o fracasan según son sus canciones y yo he tenido la fortuna de trabajar con muy buenos compositores. Este nuevo disco me recuerda un poco el “Middle Earth”, muy del estilo “El señor de los anillos” por su épica. El anterior “Spirit of man” era mas rockero que lo que había hecho antes y pienso que “Inmortal” tiene un poco de ambos. Para este nuevo disco, Frontiers pensaron que en orden de expandir mi música a mas público habría que cuidar al máximo los músicos con los que trabajar. Creo que tanto Dave Thompson como Paul Uttley hicieron un gran trabajo con “Spirit of man” pero era hora de moverse.


Frodcatley:El sello, obviamente, sugirió trabajar con Magnus Karlsson, ¿verdad? –Parecéis haber encajado a la perfección. Cuéntanos ¿cómo se trabaja con Magnus?


Bob Catley: Si, Frontiers me presentaron a Magnus Karlsson como un posible compositor y yo le conocía de su trabajo en “The battle” de Russell Allen y Jorn Lande, así que enseguida accedí. Lo cierto es que sólo hablé con Magnus un par de veces por teléfono. Hablamos sobre la dirección de las canciones y me dijo que se pondría a trabajar enseguida. En un par de semanas comencé a recibir demos y la verdad es que me encantaron. El proceso continuó hasta que tuvimos doce temas de mi gusto. Durante este proceso nuestra comunicación fue por teléfono dada la distancia entre los dos.





Frodcatley:¿Quién tomó la decisión de elegir a Dennis Ward como productor de tu nuevo trabajo?


Bob Catley: Frontiers pensaron que yo estaría interesado en trabajar con Dennis Ward quien ha trabajado para otros artistas del sello con éxito. Estoy contento de que así haya sido porque ha realizado un gran trabajo. Escuché lo que hizo en uno de los discos de Pink Cream 69 y me quedé impresionado. Creo que su trabajo es de primera y justo lo que se espera de un productor de su calibre. Lo pondría al mismo nivel que por ejemplo Paul Hodson en el disco “When empires burn”. Dennis ha sido un gran tipo con el que trabajar. He trabajado con muchos y Dennis ha sido el mas majo. Seguro que volveremos a trabajar juntos ya que tenemos las mismas ideas sobre como deben quedar las canciones. Me presentó además a los músicos de Pink Cream 69 porque estaban haciendo unos conciertos gratuitos mientras yo estaba con mi disco. Creo que ha sacado lo mejor de mi y ha sido muy fácil trabajar con él.


Frodcatley: Tu nuevo álbum "Inmortal" es impresionante. Me recuerda el nuevo Magnum. ¿Qué te parece?


Bob Catley: No se si “Inmortal” suena a “Princess Alice…”, lo cierto es que “Inmortal” tiene un montón de temas que estaba deseando cantar. Magnus se presentó con un disco lleno de buenas canciones, algunas de las cuales me recuerdan a Rainbow, lo que me dio la oportunidad de hacer mi particular imitación de Dio. Otras canciones que son medios tiempos resultan muy épicas, así que ha resultado una muy buena combinación para mi.


Frodcatley: ¿Porqué volviste a trabajar con Rodney para el trabajo de la portada?


Bob Catley: Siempre he sido un gran admirador del trabajo de Rodney, especialmente de las portadas de Magnum. Lo que hicimos fue mandarle la letra de “We are inmortal” y esperar a ver que se le ocurría. Tengo que decir que estoy muy contento con el resultado. Me recuerda a los primeros dibujos que vi suyos a mano. Creo que el dragón con su jinete reflejan perfectamente la temática del disco.


Frodcatley: ¿Hay muchas diferencias entre trabajar en solitario y en Magnum?


Bob Catley: La manera en que trabajo en mi disco en solitario es básicamente la misma en la que Tony trabaja en un disco de Magnum. Aparte de que los compositores son diferentes, el resultado final es el mismo. Creo que los fans de Magnum pueden disfrutar de mis discos sin problemas.





Frodcatley: ¿Tienes algún plan previsto para tocar en vivo con el nuevo álbum? ¿Tienes una banda para hacer un show en vivo?


Bob Catley: Me gustaría hacer una gira en solitario el año que viene.


Frodcatley: ¿Tiene previsto venir a España? ¿Qué piensas de los fans de España?


Bob Catley: Me encantaría interpretar mis temas delante de la audiencia española ya que algunas de las mejores respuestas las he tenido allí. Gracias a todos aquellos que me han seguido a mi y a Magnum durante todos estos años.


Frodcatley: La última vez que viniste a España fue en 2006 en el NemelRock de Madrid. Te vi allí y creo que fuiste realmente amable de tu parte por pasar el tiempo charlando con tus seguidores. Supongo que es más difícil cuando tocas con Magnum. ¿Qué es lo que recuerdas de ese concierto?


Bob Catley: Si, tuvimos una fantástica noche en Madrid tocando temas de “Spirit of man” y material antiguo. Para mi es todo un placer charlar con los fans en las giras. Sin ellos yo no sería nada así que siempre tengo tiempo para la gente que es tan apasionada de la música. Me gustaría volver a tocar en vuestro país porque la gente siente de verdad la música y nunca lo olvidaré.


Frodcatley: Hablando de la actualidad, ¿no crees que el cambio en el mercado de la música puede dar lugar a que muchas bandas puedan tocar en vivo con más frecuencia? ¿Es esto bueno o piensas que podría alienar a los fans?


Bob Catley: Hoy día es muy difícil que la compañía te de dinero para hacer un video-clip para la tele, así que es muy importante para los grupos tocar en vivo lo mas que podamos. Creo que el éxito de Magnum ha sido girar sin parar durante todos estos años con la aparición ocasional de algún video-clip, pero lo mas importante es que tenemos una buena base de fans. Hoy día es mas difícil y da igual en el sello que estés. Gracias a los fans que tenemos.

Frodcatley: On your first three albums you worked with Gary Hughes. On three last ones with different people, any special reason?


Bob Catley: My first three solo albums were successful enough for me to carry on working with new songwriters for my other albums. Each album stands or falls on the quality of the songs and I’ve been lucky enough to find song writers I want to work with. This album reminds me a bit of the Middle Earth album, very Lord of the Rings, quite epic in its content. The last album, Spirit of Man was a lot rockier than I’d done before and I think Immortal has elements of both those albums. As good as Spirit of Man was, Frontiers thought I should be reaching a wider audience next time, and they wanted me to work with the right producer and song writer to achieve that end. Frontiers were very keen for me to use Magnus so I didn’t approach Dave Thompson or Paul Uttley this time round, although I think they did a splendid job on Spirit of Man. So I guess it’s just a question of moving on.


Frodcatley: The label obviously suggested working with Magnus Karlsson, right? - you two seem to have paired off nicely. Tell us about working with Magnus?


Bob Catley: Yea, Magnus Karlsson was introduced to me by Frontiers as a possible songwriter for my new album and I knew of Magnus’ work on the album, The Battle by Russell Allen and Jorn Lande and I was happy to agree to the idea. The truth is I only spoke to Magnus on the phone on a couple of occasions, we talked about the direction of the songs and he said he’d start composing my next album straight away, and soon afterwards, in the following weeks, I started to receive demos of songs he’d written for me and I liked them very much. So the process continued until I was happy with twelve songs for the album. This was all done by phone because of the distance between us, and I congratulate Magnus on a brilliant job well done.


Frodcatley: Who took the decision to choose Dennis Ward as producer?


Bob Catley: Again, Frontiers were hoping I’d be interested in working with Dennis Ward who has a great track record for other Frontiers artists, and I’m glad I went with the idea because Dennis has done a great job for me. I heard Dennis’ work on one of the Pink Cream 69 albums and I was very impressed. I think his work is world class and what you’d expect from a producer of that calibre. I’d put it on a par with Paul Hodson’s production of When Empires Burn, which I was equally pleased with. I found Dennis to be a very cool guy to work with. I’ve worked with many producers but none nicer than Dennis and I would work with him any time. We hit it off straight away, we were talking about the same ideas to get the best out of the songs. Dennis was very entertaining and introduced me to the guys from Pink Cream 69 at a charity gig they were playing while I was there, so all in all, he made it easy for me to feel comfortable and get the best out of me.


Frodcatley: Your new album "Immortal" it´s awesome. It reminds me the new Magnum. What do you think?


Bob Catley: I don’t know if Immortal sounds like Princess Alice, I just know it’s an album full of songs I couldn’t wait to sing. Magnus Karlsson has come up with an album full of great songs, some of which remind me of Rainbow so I was able to give my Ronnie Dio impression another go which I think suits some of the songs. There’s a lot of straight ahead up tempo songs on the album at first along with some more epic songs later on, so all in all, the perfect combination for me.


Frodcatley: Why did you work again with Matthews Rodney for the cover art?


Bob Catley: I’ve always been an admirer of Rodney’s work, especially the Magnum album covers. We sent Rodney the words to We are Immortal to see what he could come up with and I’ve got to say I’m very pleased with the result. It takes me back to when I first saw Rodney’s handiwork and I think the dragon and his rider compliment the mood of the album completely.


Frodcatley: Are there many differences between to work in your solo albums and Magnum?


Bob Catley: The way I put an album together is basically the same as Tony would do for Magnum, so apart from a different songwriter, the end result should be the same – an album hopefully for Magnum fans to enjoy.


Frodcatley: Are there any plans to play live with the new album? Do you have a band for live shows?

Bob Catley: I would dearly love to play a solo tour next year, but that is only if it’s feasible in the time left.


Frodcatley: Are you planning to come to Spain? What do you think about the fans from Spain?


Bob Catley: I would dearly love to play the new songs in front of a Spanish audience next year, some of the best receptions I’ve ever had have been in Spain, and I thank everyone for sticking with Bob and Magnum over the years and I hope to see you all very soon. Torpedo!


Frodcatley: The Last time you came to Spain was in 2006 at NemelRock in Madrid. I saw you there and I think it was really nice of you to spend time chatting with the fans. I assume it is more difficult when you play with Magnum. What do you remember about that show?


Bob Catley: Yes, we have a fantastic evening in Madrid, playing songs from the Sprit of Man album, and also older material. I get a lot of pleasure from talking to fans at the gigs, I’m never too busy to do that, with your fans you’re nothing, so I will always make time for people who are passionate about their music. I’d love to play there again in the near future because the audience were so moved by the music, it made it a wonderful evening never to be forgotten.


Frodcatley: Speaking of today, don’t you believe that the change in the music market resulted in the bands having to play live more often? Is this a good thing or you think it could alienate the fans?


Bob Catley: These days it’s harder for bands to get a budget for a video for the TV from a label, so it’s important that these bands play live as much as they can. I believe Magnum’s success was based mainly on touring live over the years with the occasional video out there but mainly you rely on your fan base, so I think it’s harder these days whatever level you’re at. Thank God for Magnum fans, that’s all I say.


Frodcatley: Do you have any particular favourite singer or band that influenced you during the early days? Any favourites currently?


Bob Catley: I’ve always been a fan of Ronnie Dio’s voice, also Steve Perry from Journey and Lou Gram from Foreigner so I guess there’s a little piece of these guys in me even today. I like many styles of music, right across the spectrum and I try and keep abreast of new bands. I quite like MUSE, The Enemy, Kings of Leon, The Killers, but also classic rock bands, Iron Maiden, ACDC, Rainbow, Foreigner, White Snake. Anything that rocks my socks basically.


Frodcatley: And finally... After all those years, do you have a tip or advice to keep your voice in such a good level?


Bob Catley: Yea, I go to the pub three times a week, eat a good curry on occasion so yes very specialised training for my voice, ha ha ha! I’ve never had a problem with anything so I don’t see I should start having special routines now. What do you think?
