Pre If Only (Greg Hart,Ian Edwards) and Gts (Greg Hart) band who released this very rare vinyl ep with 4 tracks of excellent pompous melodic aor. There is also a rare single that contains a non-ep track called "Shadow of a dream". If you like Gts but with more keys, and if you can find a copy, these guys are for you!
Peter Scallan - Vocals Greg Hart - Guitars John Metcalfe - Drums Andy Stewart - Keyboards Mike Nolan - Lead guitar Ian Edwards - Keyboard bass

Background Moritz were a British band trying to etch out a career in the wimpwire/hair metal stakes of the mid-late eighties. Featured in many of the leading UK rags at the time, the band could not break through into the big time, despite their best efforts. From London, the band no doubt saw the success of other British exports all signed to major labels at the time, including Virginia Wolf (Atlantic), Shy (RCA), FM (Portrait), Outside Edge (10 Records) and to a lesser extent (because they were based Stateside mainly), The Outfield and John Parr. Moritz were competing in the same space as the likes of Midnight Blue, La Paz and Peroux. All unsigned British acts looking to get the jump on each other. Moritz had professional management, and presumably it was they who organised a very professional 4-track EP to help give the band a headstart. 'Shadows Of A Dream' was the resulting output.
The Songs The band present us with a set of four tunes. All enveloped in that mid-eighties time-warp populated by the likes of FM and Shy. Starting out with a (sort of) ballad 'Can't Stop Loving You', this one is very American sounding, not unlike FM on their 'Indiscreet' album. The band rev it up on 'Place In Your Heart', a workingman's Fastway circa their 'On Target' platter, though admittedly it isn't an exceptional song by Moritz's high standards. 'City Streets' only fares marginally better.. the guitars noticeably down in the mix to my ears. Without doubt, the highlight is the last track 'Break It Up', the whole affair smacks of Shy circa 'Excess All Areas', though with the track title, you couldn't help but hear the Foreigner influence waft through on the chorus, bringing back copy-cat reminders of their similarly titled song from 'Foreigner 4'! It's a choice track though!
In Summary The band didn't last too long beyond 1987 unfortunately, and were consigned to the dusty shelves of history not long after. A cover of Moritz's 'Hearts On The Line' can be heard on If Only's 'Destiny' CD from 2004. As for this EP, it is a good rare recording, and quite classy for an independent EP I must say, and one which lives well enough in the eighties decade, but probably not beyond that. Scallan went on to sing with the band Samson, while most of the other members migrated to the aforementioned band If Only, featuring female singers Jackie Bodimead and Tina Egan, though at different stages of that bands career. This included Greg Hart, Ian Edwards and Andy Stewart. Hart also went on to GTS. Fans of the band FM should investigate Moritz willingly
