Tres años han pasado desde la última publicación del genio sueco de las seis cuerdas y como casi siempre, muchos cambios son los que vienen con este “Perpetual Flame”. Los cambios traen siempre expectación y eso siempre es bueno. ¿Será mejor que el anterior material con Doggie White?.... algo no demasiado complicado por otra parte. ¿Estará tan mal producido como los últimos discos? ¿Cuántos segundos exactamente tardará el nuevo cantante de Yngwie Malmsteen, Tim “Ripper” Owens en pegar su primer berrido?. ¿Se habrá apuntado a la moda pseudo-grunge que tan en auge está entre muchos grupos clásicos? Todas estas preguntas se responden por si solas en poco mas de un minuto.
Para comenzar, el disco tiene un sonido muy bueno, comparado con las últimas entregas del Maestro. Parece que esta vez ha actuado con sensatez y ha dejado encargado de las mezclas finales a Roy Z (Judas Priest, Whitesnake). Yngwie se ha ocupado de la producción y tambien del bajo, los teclados han sido esta vez de nuevo para Derek Sherinian (Dream Theater, Planet X) y la batería para Patrick Johansson.
Evidentemente a Yngwie no le ha dado por el grunge, ya que si hay una persona auténtica, convencida y fiel al estilo que le ha hecho tan famoso e imitado en todo el mundo, ese es Yngwie Malmsteen. El disco es muy superior a sus dos anteriores lanzamientos con Doggie White y si me apurais, es el mejor disco publicado por el sueco desde su mágnifico “Facing The Animal”, es decir 10 añitos de nada. En respuesta a la otra pregunta, 40 segundos es lo que tarda “Ripper” en meter su primer alarido. Estaba más que claro, pero…. ¿Y lo bien que queda?. Bien, pinchemos el boton play, a ver que se esconde detrás de esta horrenda portada.
Una melodía ambiental barroca in-crescendo, desemboca rápidamente en un riff contagioso al mas puro estilo de los temas iniciales de la etapa Vescera (“Never Die” o “Vengeance”). “Death Dealer” recupera de un plumazo toda la fuerza y la garra perdida en estos últimos años y deja un tema que en directo tiene que ser un auténtico cañon. Seguimos con “Damnation Game”, con un inicio que nos puede recordar y nos recuerda a “I´ll See The Light Tonight”, con un gran Ripper Owens en el tratamiento de las voces y que ya me lo imagino cantandola, moviendo la cabeza de un lado a otro y cogiendo el micro con ambas manos. Gran puente y bastante pegadizo el estribillo, si señor, muy buen tema. “Live To Fight(Another Day)” es otro tema con regusto añejo, nos transporta obligatoriamente a los primeros años del “Marching Out” o del “Trilogy”, un medio tiempo convincente.
Giro de tuerca con “Red Devil”, una canción que podría estar perfectamente dentro de “Magnum Opus” o “Facing The Animal”. El tema mas melódico del disco y donde quizás vemos mas desubicado a “Ripper”, una pena porque la canción esta realmente bien. Vuelta a las raices Malmsteenianas con Four Horses (Of The Apocalypse), tema a caballo de los que tanto le gustan a Yngwie con un claro desarrollo barroco y que inconscientemente nos recuerda a sus primeros trabajos. El sintetizador de Derek Sherinian nos hace adentrarnos en “Priest Of The Unholy”, uno de los mejores temas del disco. Nos puede recordar a la magistral “I´m A Viking”, por su desarrollo oscuro y también por la fantástica interpretación vocal, en este caso del amigo “Ripper Owens”.
“Be Careful My Friend” es el último ejemplo antes de empezar con la parte instrumental del disco, otro tema rápido de la mas clásica escuela Malmsteen. Buen estribillo.
“Caprici Di Diablo” nos entrega una demostración mas del virtuosismo del Maestro con un tema instrumental de impecable factura y muy similar en composición a la magnifica “Eclipse”, y es que no podía dejar la oportunidad de expresar su influencia con ese genio del clasicismo llamado Nicolo Paganini. “Lament” digamos que sería la balada del disco en modo instrumental, mucho feeling pero la canción en sí, no sorprende demasiado. “Magic City” es directamente la rallada del disco. Tema de mas de 7 minutos cantada por Yngwie, empieza muy bien pero luego entre la voz de Yngwie y lo larga que es, se hace pesadita. Pero que le vamos a hacer, es Yngwie. El último tema en el que participa Ripper es “Eleventh Hour”, corte con regustillo árabe de los que tanto le gustan a Yngwie y que por supuesto en este disco tampoco podía faltar, a mi me parece el tema mas flojo del disco, con eso lo digo todo. Para terminar el disco nos encontramos con “Heavy Heart”, un tema instrumental bastante soso y que despide el disco dejandote una sensación bastante agridulce.
Doce temas son los que componen “Perpetual Flame”. Siete primeros temas muy buenos y bastante paja al final lo que hace que sea un buen disco pero ni mucho menos comparable a ninguno hasta el “Facing The Animal”. Yo ya espero con impaciencia quien será el próximo fichaje vocal de Yngwie Malmsteen, ya que creo sinceramente que a “Ripper” le quedan dos telediarios y no es porque lo haya hecho mal ni mucho menos, pero vereis como no me equivoco. Yngwie, ¿Te suena un tal John West que te dejó tirado para irse con Royal Hunt?, no se lo tengas en cuenta, ahora esta libre.

Three years have passed since the last release of the six string’s Swedish genius and as almost always, there are many changes that come with this "Perpetual Flame."
Changes always bring excitement and that's always good. Is it better than the previous material with Doggie White?... it’s something not too complicated otherwise. Will it be as bad as the last releases produced? How many seconds does it take exactly the new Yngwie Malmsteen singer Tim "Ripper" Owens in take the first screech?
Was he pointed to the pseudo-grunge fashion so that in boom is among many groups classics? All these questions will be answered by themselves in little over a minute.
To start, the release has a very good sound, compared with the last deliveries of the Master. It seems that this time he has been wise, and has delegated for the final mixes to Roy Z (Judas Priest, Whitesnake). Yngwie has been involved in the production and also the bass, keyboards this time have been again to Derek Sherinian (Dream Theater, Planet X) and drums by Patrick Johansson.
Yngwie, obviously, has not opted for the grunge, because if there is a genuine person, believing and faithful to the style that has made him famous and imitated around the world, that's Yngwie Malmsteen.
The new album is much better than his two previous releases with Doggie White and, probably, the best album released by the Swedish man from his magnificent "Facing The Animal", ten years ago.

An environmental Baroque in-crescendo melody, becomes a riff in a pure style of the original themes of Vescera era( "Never Die" or "Vengeance").
"Death Dealer" recover suddenly all the power lost throughout these last years and transforms it into a song that has to be a real bomb in live concert.
We continue with "Damnation Game", with a beginning that remind us to "I'll See The Light Tonight" with a great Ripper Owens in the treatment of voices that I can imagine him singing, moving his head from side to side and taking the microphone with both hands.
Great bridge and a very catchy chorus, really a very good song.
"Live To Fight (Another Day)" is another song with an old aftertaste, transports us necessarily to the early years of "Marching Out" or the "Trilogy", it’s a convincing midtime.
Turning the screws with "Red Devil", a song that could be perfectly within "Magnum Opus" or "Facing The Animal." The more melodic song of the album, and perhaps where we see Ripper out of his element, it’s a shame because the song is really good.
Back to the Malmsteen’s roots with “Four Horses” (Of The Apocalypse), with a clear baroque development and that unconsciously reminds us of his early works.
The Derek Sherinian synthesizer make us to come into "Priest Of The Unholy", one of the best tracks of Perpetual Flame. It remind us the masterful "I'm A Viking", because of the dark fantastic vocal interpretation, in this case, by Ripper Owens.
"Be Careful My Friend" is the latest example before starting the instrumental part of the disk, another example of the Malmsteen’s style fast song. Good chorus.
"Caprici Di Diablo" give us another demonstration of virtuosity of the Master with an impeccable instrumental song and very similar in composition to the magnificent "Eclipse", and he could not let the opportunity to express its influence with the genius of classicism called Nicolo Paganini.
"Lament" would be the album’s instrumental ballad, lot of feeling itself, but not too much surprising.
"Magic City" is unfortunately, the most tedious song. A theme of more than 7 minutes sung by Yngwie, start very well but as long it is, becomes bored.
The last song performed by Ripper is "Eleventh Hour", with a clear Arabian inspiration that likes to Yngwie, it seems to me the worst song, with that I say it all.
To finish the album we find ourselves with "Heavy Heart", an instrumental song rather insipid and finish the album leaving you a lightly bittersweet feeling.
Twelve songs composing "Perpetual Flame." First seven tracks are very good which makes it a good record, but it’s not comparable to none until "Facing The Animal."
