<<ENTREVISTA>> JOE LYNN TURNER <<INTERVIEW>>

Bilboker: Hola Joe, gracias por tu tiempo. En primer lugar me gustaría felicitarte por tu nuevo disco de Sunstorm titulado “House of Dreams”. El álbum será editado en Abril y estoy seguro de que no defraudará a los amantes del anterior trabajo de Sunstorm. Al igual que en el primero, encontramos viejo material que no entró en el aclamado “Rescue You” además de ayuda externa en las composiciones (Jim Peterik). ¿Quién tuvo la idea de recuperar esas canciones olvidadas y crear Sunstorm? ¿Qué opinión te merece este nuevo álbum? Coméntanos alguna anécdota sobre las canciones que componen el disco.

JLT: Gracias por los amables comentarios. El concepto completo de Sunstorm surgió de Frontiers. Hace varios años, cuando ellos eran simplemente amigos/fans y Mario solía intercambiar música para escuchar. Un día, Mario le dio a Serafino un casete que recibió de un periodista con las demos de mi segundo álbum en solitario no editado. Años más tarde, cuando yo firmé con Frontiers, Serafino y Mario me preguntaron por aquellas canciones. Saqué los temas del archivo y la gente de Frontiers me puso en contacto con varios brillantes compositores y canciones, y el resultado es el primer disco de Sunstorm. Fue tan exitoso que decidimos realizar una continuación. Creo que el resultado es genial y continua la misma senda que el primero.


Anécdotas sobre las canciones… “Fire” fue obviamente escrita sobre una mujer y yo la compuse con Mark Muller, quien años más tarde se convertiría en el guitarrista de Shania Twain. La escribimos antes de tener éxito allá en los 80. .

“Forever” salió de estas demos “mamut” sobre el verano del 83 o 83 en el sótano de una sala de ensayo. Montamos un estudio móvil de 8 pistas ahí mismo y nos volvimos locos escribiendo y tocando cerca de 24 horas al día. Literalmente no salimos de ahí. Pedíamos que nos trajeran la comida, bebíamos mucha cerveza y otras libaciones… LOL! De hecho construimos un móvil de botellas colgadas juntas con cinta adhesiva en el techo y hasta que terminamos las sesiones hubo botellas sonando por todas partes. Fue un enorme momento de creatividad. Uno de los mejores periodos de mi vida en términos de componer y crear demos.

Bilboker: También encontramos un tema ya conocido para nosotros, Walk On, coescrita con Desmond Chile para el enorme Freight Train Herat de Jimmy Barnes en 1987. Es bonito sentir que un tema de 20 años sigue sonando fresco y contemporaneo. ¿Qué te hizo pensar en regrabar esta balada?

JLT: Me encanta su versión y Jimmy Barnes es un gran cantante pero siempre he pensado que yo hice una mejor versión en mi demo… era más cálida. Yo canté en su álbum y cuando escuché su versión pensé que cantó cojonudamente pero cuando yo la regrabé traté de recordar todas las ideas y consejos que Desmond hizo sobre cómo esa canción debía ser interpretada y creo algo de eso se deja ver en esta versión.

Bilboker: ¿Aún tienes más material antiguo para un futuro 3er álbum de Sunstorm?

JLT: Siempre tengo por ahí canciones a medias, bien en progreso o de colaboraciones pasadas.

Bilboker: Vista la buena recepción de los fans ante Sunstorm, ¿has pensado en llevar a los escenarios? ¿Sería posible ver a Sunstorm en vivo?

JLT: Vería con buenos ojos la oportunidad. Es una cuestión que depende de Frontiers y de los fans… de si lo apoyarían o no. Quizás podríamos hacer un par de festivales o un par de apariciones especiales y ver cómo funciona.


Bilboker: Las nuevas tecnologías permiten este tipo de proyectos. ¿Cómo fue la grabación del álbum? Coincidisteis en el estudio o cada uno grabó su parte por separado? ¿No crees que grabar los temas por separado puede romper la “magia” de una banda?

JLT: Para este álbum ya sabíamos a qué nos enfrentábamos (y no utilizo la palabra “enfrentar” en un sentido peyorativo) cuando empezamos porque ya habíamos grabado el primer disco de Sunstorm en el pasado y fue un éxito.

La primera grabación tuvo sus aspectos experimentales hasta en la manera en la que íbamos a trabajar juntos. Siento más como si estuviéramos buscando nuestro camino en el primero. En esta ocasión era más cómodo tratándose de colaboraciones. Echo de menos ALGUNOS aspectos de la metodología tradicional de grabación con la banda en el estudio pero las nuevas tecnologías nos proporcionan cosas que nunca hubiéramos podido hacer antes sin un gran presupuesto. Los beneficios de las nueva tecnologías compensan cualquiera de los inconvenientes de no estar en el estudio con toda la banda como solíamos hacer en los 70, 80… incluso en los 90 en cierto grado.

Bilboker: Es obvio que JLT siempre ha sido un cantante melódico, pero en los últimos años siento que tu música más cerca al Rock Melódico y al AOT que hace unos 10 años. ‘The Usual suspects’, ‘Second Hand Life’ y los álbumes de ‘Sunstorm’, incluyendo ‘House of Dreams’, están repletos de melodías pegadizas con notable presencia de teclados. ¿Te sientes más a gusto en este estilo?

JLT: Sinceramente, y sin querer sen fanfarrón, yo puedo cantar cualquier cosa y me siento cómodo cantando cualquier género musical. Hago sesiones constantemente en EEUU para televisión, radio, películas y puedo canturrear como Sinatra o sonar rasgado y gutural tipo Brian Jonhson, Me gusta ser versátil. Sin embargo los fans parecen preferir el Rock Melódico y pienso que tiene que ver con el hecho de que ese estilo de música no está siendo tan fuertemente promocionado como otros sonidos. Solías escuchar este estilo de música en todas las radios en el principio y mediados de los 80s. Luego vinieron las Hair bands (las cuales no las incluyo en la misma categoría) a finales de la década, el Grunge en los 90, ahora el . Así que… simplemente el hecho de que las radios o que la MTV no pinchen tanto del genero como solían hacer no quiere decir que a los fans les deje de gustarles

Bilboker: El álbum se titula “House of Dreams”. ¿Qué clase de sueños tiene un artista como JLT después de una carrera tan gloriosa?

JLT: Todavía estoy viviendo el sueño, agradecido y bendito. Si no fuera por vosotros chicos y los fans que lo mantenéis vivo, no habría necesidad alguna de seguir manteniendo ese sueño. Mi más sincero agradecimiento para #HardRock_&_AOR y para toda vuestra audiencia. Hay veces que sueño en convertirme en una estrella de un reality TV solamente porque creo que sería muy bueno en ello… LOL …. mi asistente ha trabajado durante un tiempo y puede que algún día se realice.


Bilboker: ¿Te veremos girando por España en unos pocos meses con BIG NOIZE (con Carlos Cavazo, Phill Soussan y Simon Wright). Qué pueden los fans esperar de estos conciertos?


JLT: Probablemente tocaremos “Battlefields”, la canción que nos permitieron organizar y luego tocar en el tour por Iraq. Estamos entusiasmados con traer con nosotros a Eric Norlander (Asia) en los teclados y Simon Wright volverá a la batería para esta caminata. Puede que caiga alguna canción de Asia… nunca se sabe.

Bilboker: También estás involucrado en ‘Over the Rainbow’, el proyecto de algunos exRainbow (+ Jürgen Blackmore). Tengo que confesarte que este proyecto ha creado mucha expectación en nuestro foro de #HardRock_&_AOR.com. En los últimos años has mostrado muchas veces tu deseo de reunir Rainbow con Ritchie Blacmore… ¿es este proyecto la consecuencia de su rechazo?

JLT: Odio utilizar la palabra “consecuencia” ya que quizás denota una impresión negativa. Simplemente queríamos dar a los fans lo que habían estado reclamando. Como nosotros hemos dicho, Richie ha dado su bendición al proyecto mediante su hijo a la guitarra, Jürgen. Basándonos en los muchos sold outs de los shows en Rusia, Ucrania y Bielorrusia y tocando para más de 2000 personas por noche, es obvio que no somos una banda clon. Tampoco es una banda tributo porque todos hemos sido parte de Rainbow (excepto Jürgen) en algún punto de nuestra vida. Ha sido genial. Tendré ensayos con la banda este mes y después iremos a Japón.

Bilboker: ¿Cómo fueron los primeros shows de Over the Rainbow en Rusia y Ucrania? Cúal ha sido tu impresión? Pasaréis por España este año?

JLT: Creo que la pregunta ya queda contestada en la anterior respuesta. Sobre lo de pasar por España, estamos trabajando en algunas fechas europeas ahora mismo. Hay muchas conversaciones pero nada confirmado todavía. Nos encantaría tocar en España.



Bilboker: ¿Es Over The Rainbow más que una banda de versiones? ¿Contempláis la posibilidad de editar un disco de estudio de Over the Rainbow?

JLT: No somos una banda de versiones porque todos estuvimos en Rainbow. Una banda de versiones toca canciones hechas famosas por otra u otras bandas. Hablamos sobre escribir algunos temas nuevos y la verdad es que una compañía mostró su interese, así que hay alguna posibilidad de que podamos hacer un nuevo álbum. Ciertamente, hay muchísimo talento en esta banda.

Bilboker: ¿Cuándo fue la última vez que hablaste con Ritchie Blackmore? Crees en su “vuelta” al Hard Rock?

JLT: Casualmente hablé con su suegra el otro día y estoy seguro de que le mandó mis mejores deseos y recuerdos a Ritchie y Candice. Sobre su vuelta al Hard Rock… no estoy seguro de a lo que te refieres. Sé que está muy contento con Blackmore’s Night y que ese es el tipo de música que siempre ha querido producir. Supe de esto allá cuando él y yo estábamos en Rainbow.

Bilboker: ¿Ha terminado definitivamente HTP (el proyecto con Glenn Hughes)? Tuve la ocasión de verte en vivo con Glenn y fue absolutamente maravilloso.

JLT: Honestamente, espero que no. He dejado la puerta abierta pero Glenn y yo estamos obviamente involucrados en nuestros propios proyectos. Espero que podamos grabar otro álbum algún día. Siempre es inspirador trabajar con Glenn.

Bilboker: ¿Cuáles son tus planes de futuro? Tienes algún proyecto en mente?

JLT: El tour con Big Noize por España, en Japón con Over The Rainbow, la promoción de House of Dreams y varias cosas que no te puedo revelar pero que sorprenderán a la gente si finalmente suceden. Es todo lo que te puedo decir ahora.


Bilboker: ¿Aún escuchas música actual? ¿Qué bandas contemporáneas te han impresionado más?

JLT: SÍ! Siempre! Maroon 5, Nickelback, Kenya West, All American Rejects, Gavin DeGraw, Daughtry…

Bilboker: No hay duda de que Internet ha revolucionado el negocio de la música. Mucha gente tiene ahora acceso a música facilitando notablemente la promoción de las bandas. Por otro lado las ventas han caído en picado. ¿Qué opinas sobre el controvertido asunto de las redes de descarga p2p y su influencia en la música?

JLT: Tengo que aceptarlo y ahora pienso que los pros compensan los contras. Me gusta especialmente porque puedo descargar unas pocas canciones y adquirir únicamente lo que quiero en vez de tener que comprar el álbum completo.

Bilboker: ¿Cuál es tu disco favorito de todos los tiempos? Y el favorito que hayas grabado tú?

JLT: Hay muchos álbumes para nombrar pero diría cualquier cosa de Hendrix, probablemente mi mayor influencia. ¿De entre los que yo he grabado? Son como hijos para mí. No hay favoritos. Dejaré a los fans que escojan sus favoritos.

Bilboker: Juguemos un poco. Define en pocas palabras los siguientes músicos:

Ritchie Blackmore: Brillante compositor y músico… uno de los pocos guitarristas que tienen VERDADERA apreciación para el arte en la canción.

Nicolo Kotzev: Virtuoso y extraordinario compositor.

Glenn Hughes: Una de las voces más distintivas en el Rock y una persona muy inspiradora para colaborar.

Yngwie Malmsteen: Brillante y pertinaz. Siempre sabe lo que quiere y a veces es muy cabezón cuando se pone, pero es parte de lo que le hace ser quien es.

Jim Peterik: Uno de los compositores más prolíficos con los que he trabajado y un artista alucinante también.

Bilboker: Esto es todo. ¿Quieres dejar algún mensaje para tus fans de #HardRock_&_AOR?

JLT: Gracias por todo vuestro apoyo. Siempre me siento humilde y grato por ello. Espero veros pronto. Paz.

Bilboker: Hi Joe, thank you for your time. First of all I would like to congratulate you on the new Sunstorm work called “House of Dreams”. The album will be released in April and I’m sure that it won’t disappoint the lovers of the previous Sunstorm work. As in the first one, we found some old stuff that wasn't on the great ‘Rescue You’ plus some external help (Jim Peterik). Who had the idea of recovering those forgotten songs and creating Sunstorm? What is your feeling about this new album? Have you got any interesting anecdotes about any of the songs?

JLT: THank you for your kind comments. The whole Sunstorm concept came from Frontiers.
A few years ago, when they were just friends and fans and Mario used to exchange music to listen to. One day, Mario gave Serafino a cassette he got from a journalist with my unreleased Joe Lynn Turner second solo album demos.

Many years passed but when Frontiers signed me Serafino and Mario took the opportunity to ask me about those songs. I took those demos out of the archives and the Frontiers people also hooked me up with several brilliant writers and songs and that resulted in the first Sunstorm album. The first was so successful that we agreed to do a follow-up. I think the result is great and follows in the same vein as the first one.

Anecdotes about the songs..."Fire" was obviously written about a girl and I composed it with Mark Muller who later became Shania Twain's guitarist. We wrote this before we made each it big back in the 80s.

"Forever" came from this mammouth demo session around in the summer of 82 or 83 in the basement of a rehearsal hall. We set up an 8 track mobile studio there and went crazy writing and playing nearly 24 hours a day. We literally did not leave. We ordered food in, drank a lot of beers and other libations...LOL! In fact we started this mobile of bottles hooked together with duct tape in the ceiling and by the time the sessions were over there were bottles clanging everywhere. It was an enormously creative time...one of the best periods of my life in terms of writing and making demos.

Bilboker:We also found a known track for us, Walk On, co-written with Desmond Child for the Jimmy Barnes album Freight Train Heart in 1987. It’s nice to feel that a 20 year old song is still fresh and contemporary. What made you think of rerecording the ballad?

JLT: I love his version and he's a great singer but i always thought I did a better version on my demo...it was a bit warmer. I sang on his album and when I heard his version I thought he sang the hell out of it but when I did it this time I tried to remember all of the pointers and advice Desmond had about how that song should be interpreted and think some of that comes out on this version.

Bilboker:Do you still have more old material for a future 3rd Sunnstorm album?

JLT: I always have songs laying around either in progress or from past collaboration sessions.

Bilboker:After the good reception of the fans, have you thought about taking Sunstorm live? Could it be possible?

JLT: I would wselcome the opportunity. It's up to Frontiers and the fans...whether or not they would support it. Maybe we could do a couple festivals first or a couple special appearances and see how it goes.


Bilboker:The new technologies enable these kinds of projects. How was the recording of the album? Did you meet each other in the studio or did you record separately? Don’t you think that recording the songs separately could break the “magic" of a band”?

JLT: For this record already knew what we were up against (and I do not mean the word "against" in a bad way) when we started because we already had one Sunstorm album done from that past that was a success.

The first had its experimental aspects as far as how we would all work together. It felt more like we were feeling our way through on the first. This time it was more comfortable in terms of the collaboration. I do miss SOME aspects of the old method of recording with a band in the studio but the new technology is affords us to do things that never could have been done before without a huge budget. The benefits of the new technology outweigh any of the downsides of not being in the studio with a band like we used to have to do back in the 70s and 80s...even in the 90s to some degree.

Bilboker:It’s obvious that JLT has always been a very “melodic singer”, but in the last years I feel your music is closer to Melodic Rock and AOR than ten years ago. The ‘The Usual suspects’, ‘Second Hand Life’ and ‘Sunstorm’ albums, including ‘House of Dreams’, are full of catchy melodies with a huge presence of keyboards. Do you feel more comfortable in this style?

JLT: Honestly, and I do not mean this in a boastful way but I can sing anything and am comfortable singing all genres of music. I do sessions all the time in the USA for television, radio, movies and can croon like Sinatra or sound raspy and throaty more like a Brian Johnson type. I like being versatile. The fans seem to like the more melodic rock, though, and I think a lot of that has to do with the fact that that type of music is not being as heavily promoted as other types of sounds. You used to hear this type of music all over the radio in the early and mid-80s. Then the hair band stuff came out (which I do not put into the same category) in the late 80s, grunge in the 90s, now the more organic alternative sound is big. So...just because radio or MTV does not play as much of the genre as it used to does not means the fans stopped liking it.

Bilboker:The album is titled “House of Dreams”. What kind of dreams does an artist like JLT have after such a glorious career?

JLT: I am still living the dream and thankful and blessed. If it was not for you guys and the fans keeping it alive there might be no need for us to keep making it. My sincerest thanks to you and your audience. I do sometimes dream of becoming a reality TV star only because I think I would be good at it...LOL...my assistant has been working on that for awhile and someday it may come to fruition.

Bilboker:We’ll see you touring in Spain in a few months with BIG NOISE (with Carlos Cavazo, Phill Soussan and Simon Wright). What can the fans expect from these concerts?

JLT: We will probably do "Battlefields," the song we were given permission to arrange and then play on the tour of Iraq last fall. We are excited about bringing along Eric Norlander (of Asia fame) on keys and Simon Wright will be back on drums for this trek. Maybe we might throw an Asisa song in...you never know.

Bilboker:You are also involved in ‘Over the Rainbow’, the project of some ex-rainbow members (+ Jürgen Blackmore). I must tell you that this project has created a huge expectation in our Rockangels.com message board. In the last years you’ve said many times that you would love to reunite Rainbow with Ritchie Blackmore, is this project the consequence of Ritchie's refusal ?

JLT: I hate to use the word "consequence" because that might give off a negative impression. We just wanted to give the fans what they have been asking for. As we have said, Ritchie has given this project with his son, Jurgen, on guitar, his blessings. Based on the many sold out shows in Russia, The Ukraine and Belarus and playing before crowds of over 2000 per night, this is obviously not some "clun band." It's also not a tribute band because we were all in Rainbow (except Jurgen) at some point in our lives. It's been great. I have rehearsals with the band this month again and then we head to Japan.

Bilboker:How were the first Over The Rainbow gigs in Russia and Ukraine? Which was your impression? Will you come to Spain with Over the Rainbow this year?

JLT: I think I answered that question in the previous answer. as for coming to Spain, we are working on some European dates now. There is talk but nothing is confirmed yet. We would love to play Spain.

Bilboker:Is ‘Over The Rainbow’ more than a ‘cover band’? Do you contemplate the possibility of a Over the Rainbow studio record?

JLT: We are not a cover band because we were all in Rainbow. A cover band plays songs made famous by another band or bands. We have talked about writing some originals and there was record company interest, certainly, there is a chance we could make an album. There certainly is a lot of talent in the band.

Bilboker:When was the last time you talked to Ritchie Blackmore? Do you believe in his “come back” to Hard Rock?

JLT: I just spoke to his mother in law the other day and I am sure she'll pass along my best regards and wishes to Ritchie and Candace. As for the comeback to hard rock...I am not sure what you mean. I know he is very happy with Blackmore's Night and this is the type of music he has always wanted to produce. I knew this way back when he and I were in Rainbow.

Bilboker:Is HTP, the project with Glenn Hughes, finally over? I saw you live with Glenn and it was absolutely amazing.

JLT: Honestly, I hope not. I have left the door wide open but Glenn and I are obviously really involved with our own projects now. I hope we can do another album some day. It's always inspiring working with Glenn.

Bilboker:What are your future plans? Do you have any projects in mind?

JLT: The tour with Big Noize in Spain, in Japan with Over The Rainbow, promoting "House of Dreams" and some things I cannot reveal details about but they may surprise people if they end up happening. That's all I can say for now.

Bilboker:Do you still listen to new music. Which contemporary bands have impressed you most?

JLT: YES!, Always! Maroon 5, Nickelback, Kanye West , All American Rejects, Gavin DeGraw, Daughtery.

Bilboker:There’s no doubt that Internet has revolutionized the Music business. Many people now have access to music, making the promotion of bands easier. On the other hand the sales are lower. What do you think about the p2p downloading programs and its influence on music?

JLT: I have come to accept it and now think the benefits outweigh the negatives. I especially like it that I an download a fw songs and purchase only what I want as opposed to buying entire albums.

Bilboker:It is Time to take a look back. Which has been the sweetest moment in your whole career?

JLT: There are too many to name so it is hard to narrow it down but since you are asking I guess I have to go with the the first time I played Madison Square Garden with Rainbow. I had gone to MSG so many times and seen great bands that influenced my career and now, here I was, on that same legendary stage, in what had become a great band myself.

Bilboker:Which is your favourite album of all time? And your favourite of those you yourself have recorded?

JLT: Again...to many albums to name but I would say anything from Hendrix is probably my biggest influence. As for those that I have recorded? They are all like children to me. There are no favorites. I would rather leave it up to the fans to decide their favorites.

Bilboker:Lets play a bit. Define in a few words the following musicians:

-Ritchie Blackmore:Brilliant songwriter and musician...one of the rare guitarists who has a TRUE appreciation for the craft of The Song.

- Nikolo Kotzev: Virtuoso and Composer Extrordinaire.

- Glenn Hughes: One of the most distinctive voices in rock and a very inspiring person to collaborate with.

- Yngwie Malmsteen: Brilliant and very driven. He always knows what he wants and is sometimes very strong-headed when it comes to getting it but that is part of what makes him who he is.

- Jim Peterik: One of the most prolific songwriters I have ever worked with and also an amazing artist in his own right.
