"Cuando nuestro compañero Juanan se enteró de que el músico sueco Niclas Olsson estaba trabajando en la continuación del fabuloso debut de Sapphire Eyes, no dudó ni un instante en ponerse en contacto con él para conocerle un poco mejor y para que nos pusiera al día sobre la actualidad del grupo. JUANAN: Hola Niclas, muchas gracias por conceder esta entrevista a fallenangelofrock.superforo.net , es un auténtico honor para nosotros. En 2012 apareció de manera inesperada un nuevo proyecto llamado Sapphire Eyes el cual resultó ser, por lo menos para mí, uno de los mejores discos de los últimos años. Un disco imprescindible que debería tener cualquier amante del AOR.
Antes de adentrarnos en este tema y de que me hables de este proyecto, quiero comenzar la entrevista con un serie de preguntas encaminadas a tu carrera musical, gustos personales, etc…
En primer lugar, ¿cómo comenzaste en el mundo de la música? ¿Desde tus comienzos has estado relacionado con el Rock?
NICLAS OLSSON: Yo nací en la música. Mi padre era y es músico y teníamos instrumentos musicales en casa. Él me compró mi primera batería cuando era un niño, la cuál he tocado durante muchos años. He escuchado mucha música, sobre todo 10 cc, Slade, Sweet, Kiss, Pink Floyd, etc. Pero he escuchado de todo, desde Spotnicks hasta James Last.
Una pregunta típica pero inevitable, ¿cuáles son tus principales influencias musicales? ¿Qué grupos nuevos sigues actualmente?
- Supongo que Journey, Foreigner, el antiguo Michael Bolton, etc. causaron gran impacto en mi forma de componer. También el “Walk In The Fire” de Strangeways, Magnum y otras bandas similares son las que me han influenciado. Pero creo que me han influenciado todas las buenas canciones que he escuchado de cualquier banda/artista sin importar su estilo.
Hay un montón de grandes bandas nuevas, pero tengo muy poco tiempo para escuchar música, excepto la mía. Pero trato de escuchar a bandas amigas o bandas y artistas para los que haya compuesto. Por mencionar algunas diría Rob Moratti, W.E.T, The Magnificent, Eclipse, Last Autumn's Dream. Por supuesto hay muchos más...
¿Para qué grupo o grupos te hubiera gustado componer y ya no sería posible? ¿De qué banda te hubiera gustado formar parte?
- Oh, esta es complicada. Me gustaría componer para cantantes más que para bandas, pora Joe Lynn Turner, Kevin Chalfant, Robin Beck, Heart estaría bien, pero lo bueno habría sido escribir algo con o para Steve Perry.
Siempre me han gustado Treat y me encantaría tocar esas canciones festivas en directo. Son realmente muy buenos en directo.
Actualmente la venta de discos está en declive pero, ¿puedes vivir de la música? ¿De qué manera?
- No puedo vivir de mi música. Los pagos apenas cubren las mezclas y masterizaciones. Todos los meses que pasamos en el estudio, donde pagamos un alquiler, se pagan de nuestro propio bolsillo. Pero como tenemos nuestro propio estudio podemos grabar para otros artistas y sacar dinero de ese modo. El problema es que mi propia música da mucho trabajo y no tengo ese tiempo.
Adentrándonos en Sapphire Eyes, ¿cómo surge el nombre del proyecto y el proyecto en sí?
- En 2007, un año después del parón de Alyson Avenue, grabamos una demo y pensamos que Sapphire era un nombre genial por eso lo llamamos así, Sapphire. Cuando empecé a trabajar seriamente con el proyecto me encontré con que había otras bandas con ese nombre.
El proyecto fue una manera para que yo hiciera las canciones que me gustan sin compromisos. No me preocupé de cómo serían las críticas. Sólo tenía que hacerlo. Afortunadamente fue muy muy bien.
¿Ha sido complicado reunir a tantos grandes músicos para este disco?
- No, no lo ha sido. Todo el mundo ha sido muy profesional y han seguido el progreso del proyecto día a día. Creo que la mayoría de ellos están orgullosos de lo que hemos alcanzado.
¿Algún músico con el que te gustaría contar y que fuera casi imposible contratarle?
- ¡Steve Perry! Pero me gustaría tener a Kevin Chalfant en una canción o dos también.
Vuestro álbum debut es una recopilación de perfectas melodías con teclados maravillosos; ¿todas las canciones del disco son nuevas o habéis rescatado alguna composición perdida en el tiempo (por ejemplo de los años '80)?
- Escribí tres de las canciones en 2006-2007. El resto fueron escritas de cuando en cuando hasta la lanzamiento del disco en 2012.
El segundo trabajo de Sapphire Eyes, que según tengo entendido verá la luz en 2014, ¿seguirá la misma línea del primer disco?
- Sí… al menos eso creo yo. Es melódico y variado y hemos puesto mucho esfuerzo en los arreglos. La capa de armonías vocales seguirá estando presente.
Es complicado elegir un tema del primer disco de Sapphire Eyes pero uno de mis favoritos es “When Love Comes Alive”, ¿cómo se puede llegar a tal nivel de excelencia? Realmente se es consciente del sentimiento que ganan las canciones cuando se les sube la intensidad en la parte final de las canciones: estribillos más intensos, doblamiento de coros, guitarras más incisivas? No sé si me explico, pero me identifico con ello ya que opino que realizasteis un gran trabajo en este sentido.
- Muchas gracias. Creo que es la última canción que escribí para el álbum. Es una de esas canciones que escribes muy rápido y todo encaja. No sé cómo explicarlo.
Parece complicado hacer un disco con 10 temas realmente sobresalientes pero vosotros lo conseguisteis, ¿Crees que este segundo álbum igualará esto?
- Ya he decidido con el primer álbum que no puedo pensar así. Nunca me pregunto a mi mismo si a la gente le va a gustar o si es tan bueno como el álbum anterior. Sólo intento hacer canciones que expresen sentimientos, no importa si es triste, alegre o lo que sea. No creo que esto ayudara a hacer un gran álbum. Pero estoy tomando elementos como voces, diferentes guitarristas etc... para este nuevo álbum.
En un futuro, ¿Crees que Sapphire Eyes se podrá consolidar como un grupo que por ejemplo pueda defender sus temas en directo y realizar alguna gira por Europa?
- He hablado con algunos de los músicos incluidos sobre esto y son muy positivos. No puedo prometer nada pero hay una gran oportunidad para hacerlo juntos. No hay ninguna gira planeada. Si funcionase sería alguna aparición en un festival por ejemplo.
¿Podremos ver a Sapphire Eyes en España o en su defecto podremos ver a Niclas Olsson?
- Nada es imposible. Tengo muchas cosas en marcha. Me encantaría tocar en España.
¿Conoces alguna banda española de Rock Melódico?
- Creo que 91 Suite eran/son de España. Conozco más grupos pero no me acuerdo de los nombres ahora mismo. Escuché a un grupo el otro día que estaba muy bien. Pero no me acuerdo de su nombre.
Por lo que vemos Suecia siempre está en un excelente momento musical. ¿A qué se debe tan buen gusto musical en Suecia?
- No lo sé. Tenemos mucha suerte de que al mundo le guste nuestro modo de construir melodías. Creo que Abba empezó esto con su manera tan genial de escribir canciones y es un gran legado para muchos escritores suecos.

In the first place, how did you get into the world of music? Have you been sinc the beginning associated with the rock?
NICLAS OLSSON: I was actually born into music. My father was and is a musician and we had instruments available at home. He also bought my first drumset when I was a kid and which I played for many years. I listened to a lot of music but I was very much into 10cc, Slade, Sweet, Kiss, Pink Floyd etc. But I listened to everything from Spotnicks to James Last.
A typical question but inevitable, what are your principal musical influences? What new groups are you following currently?
- I guess Journey, Foreigner, early Michael Bolton etc made a huge impact to my writing. Also Strangeways-Walk In The Fire, Magnum and likes are what I have been influenced of. But I believe that all good songs I've heard with any band/artist no matter genre have infuenced me.
There are a bunch of new great bands but I have very little time to listen to music exept my own. But I try to listen to friends bands or bands and artists they have written for. To mention something it would be Rob Moratti, W.E.T, The Magnificent, Eclipse, Last Autumn's Dream. Of course there are many more...
What group or groups you would have liked to compose for and is not posible anymore? What band you would have liked to be a part of?
- Oh that's a tricky one. I would like to compose for singers more than bands so Joe Lynn Turner, Kevin Chalfant, Robin Beck, Heart would be great. But a real treat would have been to write something to or with Steve Perry.
I've always loved TREAT and would love to play those partysongs live. They are a really great live act.
Currently the sale of disks is in decline but, can you live of music? In what ways?
I can't live of my music. The payment hardly covers mixing and mastering. All months we spend in the studio, where we pay the rent, are all paid of our own pocket so. But as we own our studio we can record other artists and get money that way. The problem is that there is so much work my own music that I don't have that time.
If we go into Sapphire Eyes, how comes the name of the project and the project itself?
- In 2007 a year after Alyson Avenue departed we recorded a demo and thought Sapphire was a cool name, so we just called it Sapphire. As I started to work more seriously with the project I found out that there were other bands with that name.
The project was a way for me to do songs that I like without compromises. I just didn't care what the reviews would look like. I just had to do it. Fortunately it went really really well.
Has been complicate to join so many great musicians for this disc?
- No it hasn't. Everybody have been very professional and followed up the project to get updates and so on. I think most of them are proud of what we accomplished.
Do you have any musician you would like to count on and that is almost impossible to have a contract?
- Steve Perry! But I would love to have Kevin Chalfant on a track or two as well.
Your debut album is a collection of perfect melodies with wonderful keyboards; do all the songs on the album are new or have you rescued some composition lost in time (for example of the eighties)?
- I wrote three of the songs in 2006-2007. The rest was written from time to time until the release in 2012.
The second work of sapphire Eyes, which I understand it will go on sale in 2014, will it follow the same line of the first disc?
- Yeah... At least I think so. It's melodic and varied and we put a lot effort in the arrangements. The layer of harmonyvocals will be there as well.
It is difficult to choose a theme of the first disc of Sapphire eyes but one of my favorites is "When Love Comes Alive", how can you reach such a level of excellence? He really is aware of the feeling that take the songs when they raise the intensity of the light at the end of the songs: refrains more intense, double choirs, guitars with more feelings? I don't know if I'm explainning, but I'm identifying with it because I think you made a great job in this regard.
- Thank you very much. I believe it was the last song I wrote for the album. It's one of those songs you write very fast and everything falls into place. I don't know how to explain but I'm really glad you like it.
It seems complicated to make an album with 10 songs really outstanding but you did it, do you think that this second album will get this?
- I have decided already with the first album that I can't think like that. I never ask myself if people are going to like it or is it just as good as the previous album. I just try to make songs that convey feelings no matter if it's sadness, happiness or whatever. I don't think it would help to make a strong album. But I am taking elements like voices, different guitarists etc with me for this new album.
In the future, do you think that Sapphire Eyes could be consolidated as a group, that for example, could defend their tracks live and perform any tour of Europe?
- I have talked to some of the included musicians about it and they are very positive. I can't promise anything but there is a big chance that we will bring it together. No planned tour though. If it should work it would be appearence on festival for instance.
Will we see Sapphire Eyes in Spain or in their absence can we see Niclas Olsson?
- Nothing is impossible. I have a lot of things going on. I would love to play in Spain.
Do you know any Spanish band of melodic rock?
- I think 91 suite was/is from Spain? I know more bands but just can't come up with their names right now. Heard one band the other day that was very good. Can't remember their name though.
As we see Sweden is always an excellent musical moment. Why there's so good musical taste in Sweden?
- I don't know. We are just lucky that the world love our way of putting together melodies. I think Abba started it with their very genius way of writing songs and it´s a great legacy for many swedish writers.

As we see Sweden is always an excellent musical moment. Why there's so good musical taste in Sweden?
- I don't know. We are just lucky that the world love our way of putting together melodies. I think Abba started it with their very genius way of writing songs and it´s a great legacy for many swedish writers.
