Para mí eres un músico totalmente desconocido, ¿nos puedes contar como han sido tus inicios en la música hasta sacar este trabajo?
- Empecé a tocar la guitarra en la ola del Punk Rock Melódico (bandas como Green Day y The Offspring) a mediados de los 90. Comencé a tomar clases cuando tenía unos 12 años con un tío muy guay llamado Thomas Jonshult (en aquella época Persson), que es un virtuoso de la guitarra clásica, pero también lo es de cualquier otro tipo de guitarra. Su hermano Daniel Persson era miembro en ese entonces de Morgana Lefay, actualmente en Babylon Bombs. Cuando era chaval tenía unas cuantas bandas con mis amigos y tocábamos mucho rock'n'roll en la cafetería de la escuela.
Pero después de un tiempo me cansé del poco interés y disciplina de los demás para ensayar, así que empecé a quedarme en casa, practicando yo solo. Fui pasando del Punk Rock a ser más Heavy Metal, tocando solos de guitarra de canciones de Iron Maiden y cosas así, y en mi tierna adolescencia empecé a escuchar a virtuosos como Steve Vai e Yngwie Malmsteen, aprendiendo cosas suyas también.
En la escuela de secundaría y el instituto estudié música a más alto nivel y tomé clases con otro profesor que era más tipo músico de fusión. Era genial. Su guitarrista favorito era Scott Henderson y me llevó a todo un nuevo mundo de guitarristas.
Escuchaba muchísimo a Dream Theater en esa etapa, y viendo un DVD de Mr. Big ¡me volví loco! ¡Que pasada de banda en directo! Toqué en bandas e iba a muchos conciertos con mis amigos del programa al que iba. Pat Metheny, Toto, Dream Theater y muchas otros fueron de gran inspiración. Aquí es cuando empecé a escuchar más y más Rock Clásico y a lo que nos gusta llamar "AOR" también.
Luego estudié mucho más, estuve de vieje en EE.UU para estudiar más (música por supuesto).
También yo he enseñado mucho y he sacado un album (algunos lo llaman EP) con un proyecto de Rock Progresivo llamado Cap Outrun y tocado en otros discos, como en el album de Jeff Lorber Fusion "Galaxy".
¿Cómo decides montar este proyecto? ¿Es difícil tener a alguien tan importante como Göran Edman en tu disco? ¿Es fácil trabajar con él?
- Realmente quería hacer un álbum con estas canciones, así que empecé a grabarlas yo mismo y luego invitando a los demás uno a uno durante la producción.
La única dificultad con Göran fue que está muy ocupado con otros proyectos al mismo tiempo. Pero es muy fácil trabajar con él porque es super profesional y siempre lleva mis canciones a un nivel totalmente nuevo con su voz única.
¿Qué nos puedes decir de Christian Hedgren, el otro cantante del disco, para mí un total desconocido y toda una sorpresa?
- Sí, ¡también es un gran cantante! Es un tipo bastante divertido al que le gusta cantar diferentes cosas, ¡desde Power Metal a Opera! Pero creo que encaja perfectamente en este álbum y estoy muy contento de que nos encontráramos para este proyecto.
De la batería se ha encargado Herman Furin de Work Of Art, una banda de la que todo el mundo piensa que es la gran promesa dentro del AOR, ¿Qué me puedes decir de ellos?
- Sí, ¡creo realmente que son una de las mejores bandas que tiene Suecia!¡Son geniales! Les vi en directo cuando telonearon a Toto en Suecia el año pasado y estuvo muy bien. No conozco a los demás personalmente, pero Herman y yo hablamos regularmente. Es un gran tipo y soy un gran fan de él como batería.
¿Hay algún otro músico que te hubiera gustado tener en el disco?
- La verdad es que no, me las arreglé para tener mi primera opción de cada uno en la banda. Guay ¿verdad?
Pero me encanta tocar con nuevos músicos y conocer gente interesante, es siempre una de las mejores cosas de trabajar en la música.
¿Cómo ha sido el proceso de composición, en que te inspiras a la hora de componer?
- Es difícil decirlo exactamente. Algunas de las melodías que puedes escuchar en el disco han estado en mi cabeza durante muchos años. Y algunas de las canciones fueron escritas específicamente para el disco justo antes de que empezara a grabarlo. En lo que se refiere a la inspiración suelo decir que suelo estar inspirado de todo lo que escucho y he pensado que es bueno. Pero creo que grupos veteranos de AOR como Toto o Journey junto con otros más nuevos como Work Of Art y Street Talk han sido la principal inspiración para este disco.
Es un disco muy cuidado en todos los aspectos, aparte de la producción que te has encargado tú, has contado para las mezclas con Per Ryberg (Street Talk, Sven Larsson) y para la masterización con Sören Von Malmborg (The Rasmus, Dan Reed). ¿Estás satisfecho con el resultado final? ¿Cambiarías algo?
- Sí, estoy muy satisfecho con el resultado final y creo que han hecho un gran trabajo, ¡los dos!

You are a completely unknown musician for me, could you tell us how did you start on the music world before releasing this album?
- I started to play guitar in the wave of melodic punk rock bands like Green Day and The Offspring in the middle of the 90’s. I started to take lessons when I was about 12 with a really cool dude called Thomas Jonshult (Persson at that time) who’s a classical guitar virtuoso, but he’s a great ”all-round” guitar player as well. His brother Daniel Persson was a memder of Morgana Lefay at that time, nowadays in Babylon Bombs. As a kid I had some variuos bands with my friends and played a lot of rock’n’roll in the school cafeteria.
But after a while I just got tired of the others lack of interest and discipline to rehearse, so I started to stay at home for the most, just practicing by myself all days. I went from punk rock to be more of a heavy metal guy, playing guitar solos from Iron Maiden songs and stuff like that, and in my early teen years I started to listen a lot to virtuosos like Steve Vai and Yngwie Malmsteen and started to learn their stuff too.
In the upper secondary school/high school I studied music at a higher level and took classes with a new guitar teacher who was more of a fusion type of musician. It was great. His favourite player was Scott Henderson and he brought me to a whole new world of guitarists.
I listened a lot to Dream Theater during this time period and I watching a dvd with a live show with Mr. Big and I was totally blown away! What an amazing live band! I played in bands and went to a lot of concerts with wy friends from the program I went to. Pat Metheny, Toto, Dream Theater and a lot of cool stuff that was great inspirations. This was when I started to listen more and more to classic rock and what we like to call ”AOR” too.
Then I've been studying a lot more, I've been on a trip to USA for more studies (in music of course).
I have also been teaching a lot myself and I've released an album (some call it an EP) with a progressive rock project called Cap Outrun and played on others albums, like the Jeff Lorber Fusion album "Galaxy".
How do you decide to make this project? Is it difficult to have such an important person as Göran Edman on your album? Is it easy working with him?
- I really wanted to make an album with these songs, so I started to record them pretty much on my own and then I invited the others one by one throughout the production.
The only difficulty with Göran would be that he's very busy with other projects all the time. But it is very easy to work with him because he is super professional and he always takes my songs to a whole new level with his own way of phrasing with the unique voice he's got.
What could you tell us about Christian Hedgren, the other singer from the album, completely unknown for me and a big surprise?
- Yes, he's also a fantastic singer! He's also a quite funny guy who likes to sing a lot of different stuff from power metal to opera! But I think he suits this album perfectly and I'm very happy that we found each other with this cooperation.
At the drums is Herman Furin from Work Of Art, a very promising AOR band, What can you tell me about them?
- Yeah, I actually think that they are one of the best bands that Sweden's ever had! They're great! I saw them live as the supporting act for Toto in Sweden last year and that was very nice. I don't know the other guys personally, but me and Herman talk to each other regularly. He's a great guy and I'm a big fan of him as a drummer!
Is there another musician that you would have liked to have on the album?
- Actually not, I managed to get my first choice on each position in the band! Pretty cool, right?
But I love playing with new musicians and to always meet new interesting people is one of the best things with working with music.
How has been the composing process, which is your main inspiration?
- It's always hard to say exactly. Some of the melodies that you hear on the album has been spinning around in my head for many years now! And some of the songs were written specifically for the album right before I started to record it. And when it comes to inspiration I use to say that I'm inspired of everything I've ever heard that I thought had any good stuff in it. But I guess that older AOR-acts like Toto and Journey mixed with the newer ones as Work of Art and Street Talk has been some kind of main inspiration for this album.
Is a very good done album, in everything, you are in charge of the production, but for the mixing is Per Ryperg (Street Talk, Sven Larsson) and for the mastering Sören Von Malmborg (The Rasmus, Dan Reed), are you satisfied with the final result? Would you change something?
- Yes I'm very satisfied with the result and I think they've been doing a great work, both of them!

- You said it yourself, they're the perfect label for melodic sounds! They're distributing it and they put me in touch with interviewers.

- We are talking about that. I hope so!

Your work on the guitar is great all along the album. Which are your influences as a guitar player?
- Thank you very much!
Steve Vai has been a huge inspiration to me as a guitar player but maybe not as much as an influence. I mean, I can't do all that kind of crazy stuff that he's doing and all that whacky compositions is not really my style. But like I said, a HUGE inspiration! I think he's absolutely amazing!
John Petrucci also had a big influence on me when I was younger. But there are many more, like Joe Satriani, Yngwie Malmsteen, Paul Gilbert, Steve Lukather, Eric Johnson, Pat Metheny, Joe Bonamassa and like one thousand others…
Which are your favorite bands? Which ones have influenced you on your songs? Is there any new band that you can recommend us?
- Toto, Mr. Big, Chicago, Work Of Art, Street Talk and Gotthard to mention a few. New band? The Winery Dogs of course! =)
This days everyone makes illegal downloading... don't you think that is a bit crazy to release albums this days?
- Yes, but I am crazy.
Do you have any other project or have they invite you to collaborate in any other album?
- Right now I'm mostly focusing on this, but I have some fresh ideas in mind too and I've got som interesting offers. It's too early to say anything about it though.
Do you have any other hobbies but the music? (books, cinema, video games...)
- Yes, training and NHL on Xbox!

Your work on the guitar is great all along the album. Which are your influences as a guitar player?
- Thank you very much!
Steve Vai has been a huge inspiration to me as a guitar player but maybe not as much as an influence. I mean, I can't do all that kind of crazy stuff that he's doing and all that whacky compositions is not really my style. But like I said, a HUGE inspiration! I think he's absolutely amazing!
John Petrucci also had a big influence on me when I was younger. But there are many more, like Joe Satriani, Yngwie Malmsteen, Paul Gilbert, Steve Lukather, Eric Johnson, Pat Metheny, Joe Bonamassa and like one thousand others…
Which are your favorite bands? Which ones have influenced you on your songs? Is there any new band that you can recommend us?
- Toto, Mr. Big, Chicago, Work Of Art, Street Talk and Gotthard to mention a few. New band? The Winery Dogs of course! =)
This days everyone makes illegal downloading... don't you think that is a bit crazy to release albums this days?
- Yes, but I am crazy.
Do you have any other project or have they invite you to collaborate in any other album?
- Right now I'm mostly focusing on this, but I have some fresh ideas in mind too and I've got som interesting offers. It's too early to say anything about it though.
Do you have any other hobbies but the music? (books, cinema, video games...)
- Yes, training and NHL on Xbox!
