Jesús Del Río: Hola Alexander, qué tal, ¿nos podrías contar tus comienzos en la música hasta crear Sonic Station?
Alexander Kronbrink: Empecé a tocar la guitarra cuando tenía 9 años. Mi padre también toca la guitarra así que fue una decisión natural. Empecé a estar muy interesado en tocar la guitarra y en la música en general cuando descubrí a Nirvana y a Soundgarden a mediados de los 90. Tuve unas cuantas bandas con mis amigos (entre ellos Jonathan Fritzén a la batería, que ahora toca el teclado en mi álbum) y tocábamos música de Nirvana, Rage Against The Machine y bandas similares, que eran las populares en esa época. ¿Cómo surge la idea de Sonic Station?
Conocí a Marika Willstedt en el "Royal College Of Music". Ella es una talentosa multi-instrumentalista, cantante, compositora y arreglista. Empezamos a trabajar en unas cuantas canciones en 2006-2007 y en 2008 decidí hacer un álbum completo. Los dos, Marika y yo, somos grandes fans de Toto, David Foster y el sonido fácil y agradable de Los Angeles, así que la dirección del álbum estaba bastante clara.
¿Estás satisfecho con el resultado de este primer trabajo? ¿Cambiarías algo?
¡Estoy muy contento! Hicimos este álbum con poco presupuesto y por supuesto siempre vives y aprendes. Hay algunas cosas del proceso de grabación que me gustaría hacerlas mejor en el próximo disco, pero a pesar de todo estoy muy contento con todos los músicos, el sonido y las canciones.
Además de tocar la guitarra y componer, te has encargado de la producción con un gran resultado, ¿sueles trabajar como productor para otros artistas?
Si, he hecho trabajos de producción para otros artistas. Aunque espero que Sonic Station me abra algunas puertas y que ese sea mi camino a seguir.
¿Qué tal respuesta está teniendo el disco?
La acogida ha sido muy buena. Muy buenas críticas y hay gente que ha contactado conmigo para felicitarme por este buen álbum.
¿Qué ha supuesto para ti fichar por un sello tan importante hoy en día para el Rock Melódico como Frontiers Records?
Ha significado mucho fichar con un sello que tiene las conexiones y canales idóneas para mi tipo de música.
¿Qué tal están apoyando el disco?
Trabajan mucho para conseguirme entrevistas, críticas y esas cosas. Estoy muy contento con su compromiso con mi disco.
¿Por qué optas por varios cantantes para las canciones?
En este proyecto he tenido el privilegio para ello. Para mí la melodía es lo más importante de una canción y después de eso la producción. Todas las canciones tienen algo único que me hacen escuchar diferentes voces en ellas. Y ahora he tenido la oportunidad de elegir una voz diferente para cada canción.
En el disco colaboran grandes músicos como el famoso pianista de Smooth Jazz Jonathan Fritzén y Aron y Henrik de Dirty Loops, ¿fue fácil tenerlos en el disco?
Si, son viejos amigos míos. De hecho Jonathan, Aron, Henrik y yo tenemos nuestra propia banda Moonlight Sailors. ¡Aunque todavía no hemos editado nada!
¿Vas a presentar el disco en directo?
Ciertamente sí. Estoy mirando las posibilidades para ir al extranjero y tocar. Por ahora sólo tengo conciertos contratados en Suecia.
¿Habrá más discos de Sonic Station?
Sí, ya estoy trabajando en el segundo álbum. Voy a tener unas interesantes colaboraciones co-escribiendo para el disco.
¿Cuáles son tus influencias?
Para este álbum sería natural decir Toto o David Foster. Eso por supuesto es en parte verdad. Pero también otras influencias de música que escucho desde que era un chaval... como Soundgarden, Metallica, Pat Metheny, Michael Jackson y Roxette.
¿Qué música escuchas habitualmente?.
Mucho Westcoast y AOR, especialmente de los '80. Uno de mis cantantes favoritos es Bobby Caldwell al que escucho mucho. Por supuesto Toto, pero luego también cosas más Heavies como Giant y Def Leppard. Journey es uno de mis favoritos con el excelente Steve Perry.
¿Has descubierto alguna banda interesante últimamente que nos puedas recomendar?
Ole Børud, de Noruega, es un artista que he descubierto recientemente. Un cantante realmente bueno y productor del género Westcoast/Soul.
¿Tienes algún otro proyecto o colaboración en marcha?
Ahora mismo estoy mirando co-escritores para el próximo álbum. He estado hablando con algunas de las leyendas de la música Westcoast y veremos los resultados en varias sesiones.

Jesús Del Río: Hello Alexander, how are you? Could you tell us about your beginning in the music till you start with Sonic Station?
Alexander Kronbrink: I started playing the guitar when I was 9. My father is also playing the guitar so it was a natural decision. I started to get really interested in guitar playing and music in general when I discovered Nirvana and Soundgarden in the mid 90's. I had some bands with my friends (among them Jonathan Fritzén on drums, now playing the keyboards on my album) and we played music by Nirvana, Rage Against the Machine and similar bands, being popular during that time. When I was 15-16 years old I got introduced to the jazz-fusion and jazz world. Guitarists like Pat Metheny, Mike Stern and Lee Ritenour made a huge impact on me. And through Lee Ritenour I started to listen to bands like Toto, Mr Mister and artist like Kenny Loggins and Michael McDoanld. I studied on the “Royal College of Music” in Stockholm and graduated 2008. After that I've been working as free-lancing guitarist, session guitarist and songwriter/producer.
How came up the idea of Sonic Station?
I met Marika Willstedt at the “Royal College of Music”. She is a very talented multi-intrumentalist, vocalist, songwriter and arranger. We started working on some songs in 2006-2007 and in 2008 I decided to do a whole record of it. Both Marika and I are big fans of Toto, David Foster and the slick sound from Los Angeles, so the direction of the album was quite clear to us.
Are you happy with the final result of this first album? Would you change something?
I'm very happy! We made this album with a low budget and of course you always live and learn. There are some things in the recording-procedure I wanna do better on the next record, but over all I'm very happy with all the musicians, the sound and the songs.
Apart from playing the guitar and composing, you have done de production with a great result. Do you work as a producer for other artists?
Yes, I have done some producing jobs for other artists. Although I hope that Sonic Station are gonna open some doors and lead to more of that.
How is being the answer about the album?
The reception has been very good. Very good reviews and people have also contacted me and thanked me for a good record.
What has meant for you to sign with such an important label in melodic rock as Frontiers Records?
It have meant a lot to sign with a label that has the right connections and canals for my kind of music.
How they are supporting the album?
They do a lot of work for me with getting interviews and reviews and so on. I'm very happy with their engagement in my album.
Why do you choose different vocalists for your songs?
In this project I had that privilege. For me the melody are the most important thing in a song and after that the production. All songs have something unique that made me hear different voices on them. And now I had that opportunity to choose a specific voice to fit each song.
In this album works big musicians as Smooth Jazz Jonathan Fritzén and Aron and Henrik from Dirty Loops, was it easy to have them on the album?
Yes, they are all old friends of mine. Actually me, Jonathan, Aron and Henrik have a band of our own called Moonlight Sailors. Nothing released yet though!
Are you going to present the album live?
Yes, certainly. I'm looking over the possibilities to go abroad and play it. Right now I only have gigs booked in Sweden.
Will they be more albums of Sonic Station?
Yes, I'm already working on a second album. I'm gonna do some interesting co-writing sessions for that one!
Which are your main influences?
For this album it would be natural to say Toto or David Foster. And that is of course partly true. But I also have other influences from music I've listened to since I was a kid... like Soundgarden, Metallica, Pat Metheny, Michael Jackson and Roxette.
What kind of music do you listen to?

Ole Børud, from Norway, is an artist who I recently discovered. A really good singer and producer in the Westcoast/soul-genre.

Right now I'm looking around for co-writers to the next album. I've been talking to some of the legends in Westcoast music and we'll see if it results in some sessions!
How do you see nowadays Westcoast /AOR scene?
It's seems to be a lot of people that really cares for these genres all around the world. And they by records, go to concerts and are genuine interested.
