Hola Mike, encantado de saludarte.

David Royal: Lo primero decirte, que Isolate fue en mi opinión el mejor disco del año 2007 y Wither, la mejor canción del año. Así que, ahora sabes que te va a entrevistar un fan de Circus Maximus. Estuve en la gira que tuvisteis junto a Symphony X y Dreamscape viendoos en Bergara en la sala Jam y alucine con vuestro concierto. De hecho me saque una foto contigo, te la envio para ver si te acuerdas, o sino, para que la tengas.

Mike: Hey tío esa es una buena foto .; -) Y gracias por esas palabras con respecto a nuestro último álbum tío. Significan mucho para nosotros ; -)



David Royal: Bueno, cuando quieras, vamos con la entrevista si te parece.

Mike: Si, vamos alla.


David Royal: ¿Qué recuerdo guardais de vuestra gira Europea y en concreto del paso por España?

Mike: En primer lugar la gira europea fue más que extraordinaria. Lo pasamos en grande, eso seguro ; -) España fue un país tan extraordinario, de hecho me impresionó tanto que volví para pasar mis vacaciones allí en agosto. Alicante; -)

David Royal: Sois una banda joven y por lo tanto no teneis una gran experiencia en directo¿Cómo os veis delante de un escenario? ¿Qué creeis que tramitis al público? ¿Salis con confianza al escenario?

Mike: Bueno, hemos dado muchos conciertos durante los últimos tres años, pero nada tan intenso como una gira completa de casi 4 semanas. Honestamente puedo decir que durante la gira con Symphony X mejoramos cada día. Nos sentimos con más confianza en el escenario y creo que los fans podían notar que nos divertíamos en el escenario.


David Royal: Hablemos un poquito de vuestra música, de Isolate, del futuro…hablemos de Circus Maximus.

Mike: Sí, hagamoslo.


David Royal: Cuando Circus Maximus se pone a componer, como lo hace? Sacais una melodía y construis la música en torno a ella? Haceis la musica y luego viene la parte vocal? Todos juntos en el local de ensayo?. Explicanos como pueden surgir de la nada, canciones como Wither o Ultimate Sacriface

Mike: La parte divertida de ser un músico es tener la capacidad de crear música y no hay ninguna regla. Es algo que te llega. Trabajamos a veces en ideas juntos como banda en nuestros ensayos/estudio y a veces individualmente , y grabamos nuestras ideas en casa. La cosa más importante que hacemos es hacer una preproducción del álbum. Es más o menos, una demo del álbum y entonces podemos reescribir líneas de la melodía, riffs y la estructura de la canción. ¡Y creeme, cambiamos muchas cosas! Cambiamos a veces un riff en específico 10 veces, para luego darnos cuenta de que la primera versión del riff era la mejor y ese mismo pasa con las partes vocales y los teclados jajaja; -) Toma por ejemplo Wither, tengo en mi ordenador 10 versiones de la canción; -) El estribillo es algo que nos “vació” totalmente . Tardó siglos antes de que estuviéramos contentos. Creo que es un ingrediente muy importante en Circus Maximus. Nosotros somos realmente críticos y no nos quedamos en el “Bueno, eso es aceptable” y no paramos hasta tener “Si, es la leche”; -)




David Royal: ¿Cuales son las principales influencias de Circus Maximus a la hora de componer?

Mike: Todo en la vida, pero todo se resume al estado de ánimo en el cual estás cuando te sientas con el instrumento, si estás triste, salen canciones como Zero, si estás feliz te sale el riff de la Arrival Of Love, jajaja; -)


David Royal: Digamos que la música de Circus Maximus es una mezcla de estilos. Yo veo influencias de Symphony X , de Dream Theater, es decir de los maestros del metal progresivo. Pero si miramos un poco mas allá, vemos tambien muchas partes quizás mas cercanas al hardrock melódico, de grupos como puedan ser vuestro paisanos TNT o grupos de Hard-Aor escandinavo como Treat, Fate, Da Vinci etc… ¿Qué opinas de esto?

Mike: Claro que sí, totalmente de acuerdo; -) Como mencioné anteriormente te inspiras por tu estado de ánimo, pero por supuesto la música de otras bandas también tiene un impacto enorme sobre tí. Eramos adolescentes cuando las bandas como Europe, Skid Row, Def Leppard, Dream Theater estaban en nuestros lectores de cd y eso ha tenido un impacto enorme en nuestro estilo como músicos. Sabes cuando las personas mayores dicen “ya no hacen música como antes ", puedo entender de donde viene esto. Creo que el rock melódico estará siempre conmigo y aparece cuando hago melodías. No puedo esconderme de ello Jaja; -)



David Royal: Si tuvieras que catalogar a Circus Maximus dentro de un estilo. ¿Cuál sería?.

Mike: Eso es una pregunta dificil, pero para mí siento que somos una banda de metal melódico. Sí somos melódicos y sí somos metal y incluimos algunos elementos que intrigan al compañero músico en cuanto se refiere a riffs guays y tempos no habitutales. Somos un crisol enorme; -)


David Royal: Mike, ¿Te has planteado a nivel personal algun proyecto en un terreno mas melódico, cercano al AOR o similar?

Mike: Oh sí, y recibo muchos email de gente para que haga partes vocales para ellos, pero no quiero ocuparme ahora mismo con la música de otra gente a menos que tenga tiempo para ella. Eso sería una falta de respeto hacia ella y CM. Tengo mucho material en casa en el que he estado trabajando desde que tenía 12 años, jajaja, y lo creas o no algunas cosas es realmente bueno para. Toma por ejemplo el pre-estribillo en Wither, que es algo que tenía tirado por ahí desde hace siglos. De vez en cuando miro detenidamente en mi caja enorme de cassettes y los escucho. A veces es como " Guau, esto es algo guay que tengo que enseñar al resto " y a veces es como "que coño estaba pesando cuando hice esto" jajaja ; -)

David Royal: Yo te vi en directo y comprobé que eres un cantante muy completo. Aparte de tener lo mas importante que es un timbre bonito, demostraste una gran versatilidad y dominio de tus cuerdas vocales, modulando la voz a tu antojo y sabiendo que hacer cada momento sin ningún tipo de esfuerzo. ¿Cuando comenzó Mike a ser cantante?, ¿Cuál es tu formación musical?

Mike: Gracias tío, es agradable de oír; -) Comencé a cantar más o menos cuando tenía 12 años. Comencé en una banda de rock tocando la guitarra y haciendo coros. A través de los años comencé a centrarme más en cantar y menos en la guitarra. Hoy en día utilizo la guitarra solamente cuando me siento y compongo.


David Royal: Al oirte cantar depende del momento, me vienen muchos cantantes a la memoria, pero para mi eres una clara mezcla entre 2. Geoff Tate y Tony Harnell. ¿Qué me dices? ¿Cuáles son tus ídolos vocales y por qué?

Mike: Sí, totalmente de acuerdo. Diría que soy una mezcla entre Geoff Tate, Tony Harnell, Sebastian Bach y de Joey Tempest; -) Esos cantantes estaban entre mis cantantes preferidos cuando crecí. Si añadimos a Richard Marx, Joe Elliot y Kip Winger creo que los tenemos todos; -) Todos estos cantantes tienen una cosa en común en cuanto se refiere a cantar y eso es MELODÍAS y PASIÓN. .tu puedes notar fácilmente que todos ellos aman cantar. ¡.Llama la atención!! ; -)


David Royal: Dentro de Noruega hay mucho mas que metal extremo. En #HardRock_&_AOR.com lo que nos interesa sobre todo es el rock melódico, asi que te voy a poner unos cuantos grupos Noruegos, y me dices una frase con cada uno de ellos. Alla vá.

-Da Vinci: No recuerdo mucho de su música, pero recuerdo que su guitarrista era impresionante; -)

-Conception: ¡Una de mis bandas preferidas! Tore Østby es un tan gran compositor y él tiene su propio estilo al tocar la guitarra. Roy Khan también ha tenido impacto enorme en mí a lo largo de los años. Gran cantante y un gran líder en Kamelot.

-Jorn Lande: El definitivo cantante de rock y un gran individuo. Su álbum en solitario Worldchanger está en mi lista top 10; -)

-Lava: No he escuchado bastante como para hacer algún comentario aquí; - (

-TNT: La banda de rock definitiva. . grandes canciones con estribillos muy pegadizos y melodías impresionantes. Tony Harnell es una leyenda y Tekrø es un compositor/ guitarrista asombroso; ¡-) Su álbum Tell No Tales es un algo obligado para todos los fans del rock melódico!

-Tindrum: Creo que tengo un cassette de ellos en alguna parte. .jiji; -)

-Ark: ¿Qué puedo decir? Burn The Sun es el mejor álbum lanzado nunca (después de Hysteria de Def Leppard) para mis oídos. ¡Jorn Lande nunca cantó mejor antes y las canciones en este álbum son tan originales y enormes! Nunca consigo cansarme de este álbum.





David Royal: Ya hace tiempo que concluyó la gira con Symphony X, asi que me imagino que estareis inmersos en la composición de vuestro tercer álbum de estudio. ¿Nos podrías adelantar algo a los fans? Posible…..Título del Album, Fecha de Lanzamiento, Onda en la que irá el disco….

Mike: Hasta ahora no parece que vaya a haber ningún concepto alrededor del álbum, pero nunca se sabe. Hemos estado escribiendo material durante los últimos tres meses y por ahora suena increíble. Hay también algunos elementos en las grabaciones de Isolate que no fueron hacia adelante porque no estabamos contentos con ello en el momento pero ahora parece que vera la luz del día. Creo que será la primera pista ¿porque?, por que la idea siempre se ha llamado la apertura jajajaj.

Lo bueno de vivir en Noruega es que el Otoño y el Invierno son muy frios, y es la excusa perfecta para quedarse en casa componiendo. Esperamos tener listo el album para el último cuarto del 2009, pero nunca se sabe….



David Royal: Ahora mismo Circus Maximus, con tal sólo 2 albumes se ha situado por méritos propios entre los mas grandes del metal progresivo. Eso es fruto de la calidad y de la originalidad de su música. Con Isolate habeis puesto en listón muy alto y solo falta el empujón final para dejar de ser una promesa y convertiros en una relidad. ¿Sois conscientes del momento en el que estais y de la importancia que tiene lo que hagais a partir de ahora? ¿Cómo lo vivís?

Mike: Si estamos al tanto de la situación y estamos muy centrados en hacer las cosas al máximo esta vez. Si trabajamos duro y tenemos un poco de suerte el proximo album podria ser el que nos lance definitivamente. Mantendremos los dedos cruzados y trabajaremos nuestros culos durante este tiempo para que así sea.



David Royal: Dime ¿Cuál es el tu disco preferido de todos los tiempos y por que?

Mike: Tiene que ser el album hysteria de def leppard, es el primer album que compre y lo tengo 3 veces en cd, dos en lp y cuatro en cassete. Para mi es el album definitivo cuando se habla de composición de canciones, melodías y estructuras de las canciones. Tengo muy buenos recuerdos de este album


David Royal: Los tres primeros minutos de “Ultimate Sacriface”, son posiblemente una de las mejores partes melódicas que he oido en los últimos años. ¿Con que canciones te quedarías de Isolate y por que motivo?

Mike: Muchas gracias. Si, esos 3 minutos son asombrosos, todavía recuerdo cuando Mats me enseño el Riff, estaba alucinado. Me encantan todas las canciones pero tengo que decir que “From Childhoods Hour” es mi favorita, es una cancion muy pegadiza y los ganchos melódicos son increíbles. Es realmente una muy buena cancion de pop-rock, directa y a la vez te hace sentir muy bien.


David Royal: Si existe un lider en Circus Maximus, cual es? Cual es compositor principal del grupo o todos aportais por igual.

Mike: A todo el mundo le gusta contribuir y eso es lo forma circus maximus pero el principal motor es Mats. No solo por ser uno de los mejores guitarristas del mundo, pero tiene mucho talento para crear el hilo de la canción y llevarla desde el principio hasta el final sin tener muchas dificultades es lo que quiero decir.


David Royal: ¿Creeis que ya es el momento después de publicar vuestro tercer album de emprender una gira en solitario?. Yo creo sinceramente que si el álbum responde a lo esperado, estareis en ese momento. ¿Tu que opinas?

Mike: Estoy totalmente de acuerdo contigo. Por supuesto estaremos mirando para acompañar a cualquier banda mas grande, pero al final lo que quieres y por lo que haces esto es porque quieres tu propio show.



David Royal: Habeis contemplado la posibilidad de editar un dvd o material en directo en un futuro cercano?

Mike: Hemos hablado sobre ello, pero todavía es un poco pronto.Supongo que uando saquemos nuestro tercer album, tendremos suficiente material para hacer un DVD entero.


David Royal: ¿Para cuando un videoclip de Circus Maximus?

Mike: Nuestro proximo album tendra videos, eso es un hecho. Pero hasta que eso llegue, los fans pueden visitar nuestra web y ver videos sobre la grabacion de Isolate. Tenemos como 100 horas de cosas guays.


David Royal: Mike, tengo por aquí un disco de un grupo que se llama Carnivora – Judas. Te suena de algo?

Mike: Jejeje. Ese fue mi primer álbum. Era el álbum en solitario de Tore Morens, el guitarrista de Jorn y necesitaba un cantante. Estoy contento de haber sido parte de ello. Una bonita experiencia.

In my opinion, Isolate was the best album of the year 2007 and Wither, the best song of the year. Now you know that you will be interviewed by a fan of Circus Maximus. 1- What memories do you keep of your European tour and the stay in Spain?

First of all the European tour was beyond amazing..we had the time of our lives , that`s for sure ;-) Spain was such an amazing country , in fact it impressed me so much that I went back to spend my holiday there in August..Alicante ;-)

2- Being a young band probably means that you do not have a lot of experience playing live. How do you see yourselves playing in front of the public? How do you think you make feel the public? Are you confidence on the scene?

Well , we have done a lot of shows during the last 3 years , but nothing as intense as a full tour of almost 4 weeks . I can honestly say that during the Symphony X tour we got better and better for each day that went by . We got more secure on stage and I believe the fans could see that we really enjoyed ourselves on stage .

Lets talk a bit about your music, about Isolate, about the future… Lets talk about of Circus Maximus....

Yes lets do so ;-)

3- When Circus Maximus composes, How does it do it? Do you create the melody and work the harmony around it? Do you create the music and the add the vocal parts? All of you together on the rehearsals. Please explain how is the process to achive songs like Wither or Ultimate Sacrifice.

The fun part of beeing a musician is having the ability to create music and there is no winning formula to it.. It is just something that comes natural . Sometimes we work on ideas together as a band at our rehearsel-studio and sometimes we work individually and record our ideas at home . The most important thing we do before we record an album is doing a pre-production of the album .This is more or less a demo of the album and here we can re-write melody lines , riffs and song structure . And believe me we do change things a lot ! Sometimes we change a specific riff 10 times realizing the first version of the riff was the best and that formula goes on and on with vocals and keyboards hahaha ;-) Take for instance Wither , I have on my computer I guess 10 different versions of the song ;-) The chorus on that one is something that really drained us..it took ages before we were happy . I guess that is also a very important ingredient when it comes to Circus maximus , we are really picky and we won`t settle with " Well that was ok " untill it is " hell yeah , that rocks " ;-)


4- What are the main influences of Circus Maximus when composing?

Everything in life I must say , but it all comes down to what state of mind you are in when you sitt down with your instrument , you know if you are sad, songs like Zero comes out , or if you are happy the riff of Arrival Of Love appears, hahaha ;-)

5- Lets say that the music of Circus Maximus is a mixture of styles. I notice influences from Symphony X, Dream Theater, so basically the masters of the progressive metal. But if we look farther, we can also notice Melodic Hardrock influences from groups like TNT, or Scandinavian Hard-Aor like Treat, Fate, Da Vinci, etc… What you think about this?

Hell yeah , I totally agree with you ;-) As mentioned above you get inspired by your own state of mind , but of course music from other bands also has a huge impact on you . We were all in our teens when bands like Europe , Skid Row , Def leppard , Dream Theater were in our cd players and that has made a huge impact on our style as musicians . You know how it is when old people say " they don`t make music like they used to " and I can understand where they are coming from , I belive the melodic-rock will always be with me and that also shines through when I make melody-lines ..can`t hide away from that haha ;-)

6- If you had to catalogue Circus Maximus within a style. Which one would it be?

Ah that is hard , but for me I feel like we are a melodic metal band . Yes we are melodic and yes we are very metal and we throw in some elements which intrigues the fellow musician when it comes to cool riffs and odd time signatures . We are a huge melting pot so to speak ;-)

7- Mike, you have considered at a personal level any project related to melodic, AOR or similar?

Oh yes , and I do get a lot of emails from people who wants me to do some vocals for them , but I do not want to busy myself with other peoples music unless I have time for it . That would be unrespectable to them and to CM . I have a lot of material at home which I have been working on since I was 12 years old, hahaha, and believe it or not but some of the stuff is real good stuff in my ears . Take for instance the pre-chorus on Wither, that is something I had laying around for ages . So occasionally I digg deep into my huge box of cassettes and take a listen . Sometimes it is like " Wow that is some cool stuff I must show that to the guys " and sometimes it is like " what the hell was I thinking of there " hahaha ;-)

8- I watched you live and I noticed that you are a very complete singer. Aside from having the important thing that it is to have a nice timbre, you demonstrated a great versatility and control of your vocal cords, modulating the voice to your will, and knowing what to do every moment without any apparent effort. When did Mike start to sing?, What is your musical formation?

Thx buddy, that is nice to hear ;-) I started to sing more or less when I was 12 years old..I started of in a rock band playing guitar and doing backing-vocals . Over the years I started to focus more on the vocals and less on the guitar . Nowadays I only use the guitar when i sit down and write music .


9- When listening to your singing, many singers come to my mind, but for me you are a clear mixture between two. Geoff Tate and Tony Harnell. What do you think about that? Which are your vocal idols and why?

Yeah , I totally agree with you . I would say I'm a mixture of Geoff Tate , Tony Harnell , Sebastian Bach and Joey Tempest ;-) And those vocalists were among my favourite vocalists when I grew up . If we add Richard Marx , Joe Elliot and Kip Winger I think we`ve got them all ;-) All of these vocalist have one thing in common when it comes to singing and that is MELODIES and PASSION ..you can easily hear that they all love to sing ..it shines through !! ;-)

10- In Norway there is much more extreme metal. In #HardRock_&_AOR.com, our focus is mainly melodic rock, so I am going to tell you a few Norwegian groups, and you tell us a phrase about each one of them. There it goes:

Da Vinci: I don`t recall to much of their music , but I remember that their guitar player was awesome ;-)

Conception: One of my favorite bands ! Tore Østby is such a great songwrighter and he has his own style when it comes to playing guitar. Roy Khan has also made a huge impact on me over the years..great singer and a great frontman in Kamelot .

Jorn Lande: The ultimate rock-singer and a great guy . His solo album Worldchanger is on my top 10 list ;-)

Lava: Haven`t heard enough to make any comment here ;-(

TNT: The ultimate hardrock band..great songs with catchy choruses and awesome melodies . Tony Harnell is a legend and Tekrø is just an amazing songwriter/guitar player ;-) Their album Tell No tales is a must for all fans of melodic rock !
Tindrum: I think I have a cassette of them somewhere ..hihi ;-)

Ark: What can I say ? Burn The Sun is the best album ever released ( after Def leppard Hysteria ) in my ears . Jorn Lande has never sang so good before and the songs on this album is so inovative and huge ! I never get tired of this album .


11- Long time ago the tour with Symphony X concluded, so I imagine you might be immersed in the composition of your third studio album. Could you advance anything about it to us for the fans? Possible Album Title, Release Date, Concept of the album….

So far it doesn`t look like it will be any concept around this album , but you`ll never know . We have been writing material for the last 6 months and so far it sounds amazing !!! There are also some elements from the recordings of Isolate that didn`t go through , because we weren`t happy with it at the moment , but now it looks like it will see the light of day..I think it will be the opening track , why ? Well the idea has always been called The Opening hahaha ;-) The great thing about living in Norway is that the winter/fall gets pretty cold and that is a perfect excuse to go inside and write music ;-) We are hoping for a release in late 2009 , but you never know ;-)



12- Right now Circus Maximus, with only two albums, has been placed by own merits between the great ones of the progressive metal. That is fruit of the quality and the originality of its music. With Isolate you have created great expectations and the only thing left is the final boost to become something big. Are you conscious of the moment in which you are and the importance of what you do from now on? How do you feel about it?

Yes we are very much aware of the situation , and we are very focused on doing things to the max this time . If we work hard and get a little lucky the next album may DO IT for us . We are keeping our fingers crossed and working our asses of in the mean time ;-)



13- What is your favorite album of all times and why?

That must be Def Leppard and the album Hysteria . That is the first album I ever bought and I have it on 3 cd`s , 2 LP`s and 4 cassettes ;-) This is to me the ultimate album when it comes to songwriting , melodies and the structure of the songs . I have a lot of good memories from that album ;-)


14- In My Opinion, the first three minutes of Ultimate Sacriface, are the best melodic composition that I´ve listened in years....What are your favorite songs of Isolate and why?

Well thx and yes those 3 minutes are amazing... I still remember when Mats showed me the riff..I was blown away !! I love all the songs , but I must say that From Childhoods Hour is my favourite . It is a really catchy song and the melody-hooks is amazing . It is a really good pop/rock song..straight to the point and a good feel to it .



15- If there is a leader in Circus Maximus, who is it? Who is the main composer of the band, or everybody contributes the same way?

Everybody loves to contribute and that is what makes CM , but the main engine is Mats . Not for just beeing one of the best guitarists in the world , but he has a talent for making a song float and getting from start to end , without getting to many threads on the side if you know what I mean ? ;-)


16- Do you believe that after publishing your 3rd album, it will be the time to do a tour just by yourselves? I sincerely believe that if the album matches the expectation, you will be fine. What do you think?

I totally agree with you . We of course will be in the look out for support-slots for bigger bands , but in the end that is why you do this..you want your own show ;-)


17- Have you considered publishing a dvd or live material in a near future?

We have talked about it , but we feel it is a little to early for that . I guess now when the third album will be released we would have enough material to do a full DVD ;-)


18- When Circus Maximus video clip?

Our next album will have videos for it..that is a fact . But in the meantime fans and such may visit our site to see behind the scene footage from the recordings of Isolate..we have 100`s of hours with cool stuff ;-)


19- Mike, I have around here an album called Carnivorous - Judas. Does it ring the bell?

Hehehe , yeah sure ( Carnivora ) , that was the first album I ever released . It was Tore Morens ( Jorns guitar player )solo album and he needed a singer for it. I am glad I was a part of that..nice experience to have with me ;-)
