<<ENTREVISTA>> JEFF SCOTT SOTO <<INTERVIEW>> Jeffscottsotocover

    <<ENTREVISTA>> JEFF SCOTT SOTO <<INTERVIEW>> Jss1

    <<ENTREVISTA>> JEFF SCOTT SOTO <<INTERVIEW>> Jss4

    <<ENTREVISTA>> JEFF SCOTT SOTO <<INTERVIEW>> Jss2

    <<ENTREVISTA>> JEFF SCOTT SOTO <<INTERVIEW>> Jss5

Muchas gracias.

    ENGLISH VERSION

Joserra: There’s no doubt: We have to congratulate you for the amazing album you have published, Jeff. It’s one of the best we have listened this year. I suppose you feel very proud.

Jeff: Thank you and yes, I am very proud of it in so many ways...from the performances to the songs to the sound, it is a shining moment for me and I love listening to it.

Joserra: "Damage Control" seems to be a consequence of your previous album, a reaction because the critics against the absence of rock influences in "Beautiful Mess", by the way, an album I love and it was well treated in fallenangelofrock.superforo.net in that moment. ( https://fallenangelofrock.superforo.net/t3479-jeff-scott-soto-beautiful-mess-80-100?highlight=Beautiful+mess )

Jeff: Not really, I go through many musical phases but overall I like to see my solo career as an open canvas. I don’t want to just repeat all the things I do with others because why do solo albums if they sound or compete with the other aspects of my career? When I did Love Parade, my whole being was absorbed by chasing another sound completely, same as "Prism", "LITT" and "Beautiful Mess", they all reflect where I was at musically as much as "Damage Control" does now.

Joserra: How do you feel when a part of your fans doesn’t accept that an artist they have been following gets out of their expectations? Pay attention, in a different case, to it’s happening with the new albums by Europe.

Jeff: I cant stop and think or worry about that really, I am trying to stay true to myself and since I don’t have a Platinum selling career to follow up on, I don’t dwell one what people expect as much as I do on what I want to do from the heart. In the end, I want the fans who have open minds about music because in the end, they like my voice and no matter what I am singing, it’s still my voice. But if I had to listen to what everyone wanted from me, I would be just as scattered and could never do it from the heart so I have to follow it if and when something hits me that I want to do.

Joserra: However, in Talisman it was very usual to find Funky, Soul elements, Pop covers… that fans enjoyed, don’t you think so?

Jeff: That’s a great reference, we started very Melodic/Hard Rock and tapped into Red Hot Chili Peppers or Extreme territory, it was more important for us to enjoy what we were doing otherwise we would have collapsed much sooner.

Joserra: I guess it’s a very sensitive matter, but let me share with you that we miss a lot Talisman and Marcel Jacob.

Jeff: He was a brother, I find I think or talk about him pretty much every day...it’s never easy to lose someone that close but I do have our catalog and memories that keep him alive and with me every day.

Joserra: I have waited for a long time to ask you about the two versions of "Life". In one of them the songs are linked, but in Japanese versions they come in a traditional way and are longer. Why was it done that way?

Jeff: That was one of Marcel’s quirky decisions actually, haha. We mixed the 1st version of the album very quickly because of the deadline to turn in the masters to our Japanese label. In the end, we hated the mixes and couldn’t even listen to the album. Our label in Europe didn’t want us to be disappointed so we went in to remix it. Marcel remembered a Prince album I played him that had only 1 track sequence on the CD meaning you couldn’t forward to the next song, you had to listen to the WHOLE album to get to the next songs. He thought it was brilliant as much as frustrating but what a concept, force the listener to truly ‘listen’ to the album! He did a similar idea with "Life", he faded songs into the next to force people to give the songs they might skip over a chance.

Joserra: The sound in "Damage Control" is very good, very powerful with melodies well worked. It sounds very uniform despite there are a lot of musicians involved in it.

Jeff: Yes, I am quite pleased at how the structure ended up in the end, it could have been a disaster really but high marks to my mixing engineer John Ellis who made it all sound as one.

Joserra: I appreciate specially the guitar sound.

    Jeff: So do I.

Joserra: What about the work of Jorge Salán in your album, besides the songs which he plays in? He is going to be your guitar player on tour, isn’t he?

Jeff: Yes, the same line up as my last solo tour will be with me, those guys are like brothers to me and we have the best time on the road, I truly look forward to another tour with them!

Joserra: Another thing people talk about about "Damage Control" is the way you sing. I think you have done and excellent work, both in the aggressive range and in the gentle, in a beautiful way.

Jeff: I treat every song with the passion of the lyric, if its tender, it must convey the emotion...same as if it is heavy and aggressive. But in the end, I want it all to be melodic!

Joserra: One of the aspects I always like most it’s the way you pay attention to details in the chorus. You are a real master: you know when you have to do them, the intensity, the different nuances. It looks like you pay attention to that in particular.

Jeff: I guess it comes naturally, I cant help but want the chorus to be something memorable, something the audience can grip onto especially live. Sometimes it can be dated to be ‘predictable’ but it is how I write I guess, if I am too ‘creative’, the hook my suffer and what could have been a great track goes to shit!

Joserra: You have told you had a lot of songs for the album. The bonus tracks in the special edition are really good. So I think there must be more good songs we are never going to hear. Can you tell us something about the rest of the songs?

Jeff: I had a lot of ‘ideas’, not full songs....all of the ideas were heard then the chosen as to what would become full songs, that’s who I chose the final 14. Some of the other ideas could come up later but again, it all depends on where I am musically when it’s time for another album.

Joserra: You have a long career as a musician, despite you are still a young man. What things would you like to do as an artist you haven’t done?

Jeff: Haha, I’m not that young, but I do think it’s important to look how you feel and since I feel great I do my best to stay in good physical health. The only left to do as an artist for me is to sell millions of a solo album and headline arenas!

Joserra: Which is the album you have recorded that reflects who Jeff Scott Soto is, both as an artist and as a man?

Jeff: They all do because they round me up as an artist overall, my favorite solo albums I could listen from start to finish are Beautiful Mess and Damage Control!

Joserra: Jeff, thank you for answering our questions, and for having given us your excellent music, and in particular for your new album. We are enjoying it a lot.

Jeff: My pleasure, I makes me happy to know when people get me and understand what I am trying to do as an artist, thanks so much!
